Barbara Kellerman in his article entitled Leaders and Followers had tried to argue the importance of interdependence between leaders and followers. In an example that she gave, many leaders in both politics and business had suffered because of the lack of interdependence in working and sharing with their followers. These two kinds of people spell success and innovation in any social, political or business setting. With an article with the same title of Francisco Magalhaes, he emphasized an almost the same point discussed by Kellerman. He alloted a very great deal of importance in the harmony of the relationship of leaders and followers to be able to bring a successful job and project. In the article, Magalhaes emphasized the current arrangement of business and political setting.
According to him, time had already passed when leaders are just expected to be authoritative and commanding. In our times, such kind of leadership had brought disputes and counter-productivity in the company or any setting. What is encourage now is the leader who possess a very good deal of personality that can naturally attracts followers in following him to accomplish tasks and goals. For Magalhaes, the success of any project is dependent on the quality of the leader and followers.
The productivity of the followers is dependent of the leaders capability to encourage and support them. The success of a leaders depends on his followers capability and productivity. Hence, there is mutual relationship that exist between the two that is very vital for the success of their project and goals. In many sense, Kellerman and Magalhaes had provided the same way of defining what is an effective leader and followers are. As a follower, I tend to embrace an active role in the activities of our team.
While respecting the decisions of my leaders, I also provide meaningful inputs to the brainstorming of ideas and execution of the project which I consider to improve our performance as a team. As a team player, I carefully watch my actions so that I can fulfill the alloted goals given to me. I also lend a hand to any members of the team that is having a difficulty in doing his or her own task. In this sense, I am becoming a good follower which contributes to the success and innovation to our team.
Being a good follower is the key to become a good leader. Being a proactive follower who respect his or her teammates and leaders will enable you to bring good vibes and harmony in the group. As you provide insight in the team as a follower, when you become a leader, you now gathered the mindset that useful and functional ideas do not only come from you but also to your followers. Such attitudes will definitely spell harmony and good relationship in your team. The cliche, “a good leader is a good follower” may sound old and tiring for some.
However, that cliche is embedded with the greatest wisdom in any social and team setting.
