But just like any other businesses, it still requires to have a sound trucking business plan before investing in a fleet of expensive trucks. And the question we are going to ask if we engage in it is, “How does a trucking business work? ” Since the start-up cost of equipment and personnel means a lot of capital outlay, it is wise to always begin with a reasonable number of vehicles.

Yet from the start you have to purchase quality and safe equipment to save your time from repairing your trucks and of course, most of all to ensure proper package handling and to minimize damage to cargo. Usually at the start of the business venture the tendency is that you are focus on a particular industry like the cement industry or maybe food industry, in this case you have to customize your services to meet their specific and unique needs. However, this is very risky, as anytime future upheavals in that sector might drastically reduce the demand of your services.

So that your long-range goal must be to diversify and supply to other industries, maybe to the lumberyard, or to any manufacturers and even retailers and others that need to haul their products. The clients may request to lease trucks of various sizes for their diverse hauling needs. You have to ensure that these vehicles may be made available at their bidding. Now as the demand increases, you should be prepared to expand the operations by adding more vehicles, and even later by setting up additional bases outside your locality to cope with the demands.

Then always make it a goal to provide quality service to your target segment at highly competitive prices. Low input costs will enable you to offer competitive rates and increase your market share. However, always have the mindset that soon your trucking business should grow and envision that it will become one of the largest trucking companies serving the market. Dealings with your drivers are very crucial to the fulfillment of the organizational vision. It is a necessity to hire courteous and experienced ones who can be relied upon to make deliveries on time.

Having seen their efforts and cooperation to the success of the companies’ vision do not hesitate to provide them with special benefit packages and high wages which will enable you to obtain and retain good drivers. Your working relationship with them is very important; in fact after your clients they are your second central element in this business. To save some amount for the overhead expenses, begin with a skeletal administrative staff working under your guidance. More staff can be hired later depending on the demand with the rise in sales volume and the flow of profits.

Assuming of an increase of vehicles, it means also an increase number of drivers and even the value clients-service orientation to ensure safety of the cargo they transport and complying to the set deadline, thereby resulting to satisfaction and repeat market. You can achieve these by allowing your drivers to go through some special training. In all these, you have labored and succeeded to build an excellent customer-service relationship by meeting their specific requests relating to handling of their cargo, driver preferences and timings in delivery.

As you go through the processes of trucking business, eventually you gain in experience and earn a reputation for reliable service; this will bring you to have an edge over your competitors. As you gain the trust and confidence of your clients because of your reliable reputation, your clients would soon prefer your company with their valuable cargo than a new company quoting a lower price. As you move on, assure your clients that you are ready and willing to go the extra mile to secure their interests and you will build a loyal base that rewards you with repeat business and frequent referrals.

But as much as possible, like any other businesses, it is always better to allow your unit to operate independently. This will free you from any waste of time transacting so many things and from the hazard of blaming each other, should any crisis will occur. In other words, avoid subcontractors and fee sharing.
