Aaron and Cole
Cole and Aaron had been friends since the fifth grade. Cole has some developmental delays in development but they are both able to carry on with their friendship because of the way they answer to each other’s need to belong and to care. Aaron served as a mentor to Cole who was slow to learn but a very friendly child.
At the outset, Aaron seems to be the one nurturing the friendship, yet, he also benefits from this friendship because since Aaron’s parents were divorce, he sought the comfort of having a friend who could just be with him when he needed solace. Cole provided that kind of environment. So, we can say that this friendship was effective at that point in time when they both needed each other.

Was the boys’ friendship a reciprocal one? Why or why not?
In a way, their friendship was a reciprocal one because Cole was there for Aaron and Aaron was sought by Cole when he needed him. There was a special bond between the two because they were always together and got solace from being together. It is a special kind of relationship where each is able to respond well with the other one because they had their own inner emotional turmoil to deal with. Parental love is tenacious. This notion recognizes a fundamental truth. It suffers much and endures much. Across time and cultures, parents have maintained enduring ties to children in the face of disruptions and separations caused by war or poverty or incompatibilities. These are the issues that both had to deal with and with whom they shared. This kind of sharing is a bit overcome because Cole was there to provide the listening ear and eyes to both listen and see what is all right to see. Both boys found solace, love and comfort with each other almost like siblings. In fact, Aaron serves as an effective friend to Cole who may be locked in his own world at times.
The effort of the other members of the community to minimize the damage divorce does to children is noteworthy. The kind of communication that they offer to each other is something that they both need. They have similar hurts and listening to each others of helping each other can be comforting to both their feelings. They do not burden each other because there is a feeling of lightness as they just talk about themselves so there is no additional heaviness brought about by the friendship. When one honors and respects another person in all his uniqueness, that person usually does the same for the other person.
