It is the right of every employee to be safe and secure in his or her work stations. The responsibility of ensuring safe work place lays in the combined efforts of staff and the management alike. However it is the Human Resource Manager who is mandated to oversee all activities geared towards reducing and preventing work place accidents. Work place accidents have claimed many lives and contributed to big losses which are preventable. This paper discusses the various ways in which workplace accidents can be prevented. The Human Resource Manager has a responsibility to implement the Occupational and Safety Health Act (OSHA) so that in the event of accidents in the workplace, the employee is protected. Human Resource Managers can collaborate with social security organizations to cover workers in the work place. By ensuring that workers have accident cover, the Human Resource Manager avoids the burden which would result in the event of work place accidents.

Other than the accidents, the Human Resource is mandated to protect sensitive information such as medical or financial information. Any loss or leakage of information, whether by accident or bad luck, is totally inconceivable and should be avoided. Just like accidents, loss of confidential data can be prevented by coming up with policies that protect company information, ensuring that all records are kept securely and away from hazards, as well as controlling and vetting access to information. The observance of the policies is also important in that it leads to minimal risk to the environment as a result of activities of the organization.

The HR is mandated with the responsibility of enforcing the safety and health standards set forth by the US department of Labour through the Occupational Safety and Health divisions (DOSH). The HR manager has a responsibility to carry out induction whereby the HR manager organizes mock safety evacuations drills that should stimulate the employees to anticipate accidents. Such drills are aimed at ensuring that every employee recruited into the organization fully understands and appreciates the safety and health requirements.

Periodic training is also very important in that fresh threats on the safety at the work place keep on emerging. In this era of terrorism, work places have become targets by terrorists hence the need for safety policies and procedures to be embraced. Audits of safety measurements are supposed to be carried out as often as possible to ensure that the safety infrastructure in place is up to date and commensurate to the prevailing threat of accidents. In cases of violations of safety and health measures set forth, the human resource managers should be swift in enforcing the applicable punishments or by reprimanding the offenders.

This serves as a deterrent measure to prevent workers from behaviours detrimental to the safety standards of the organization. Organizations should form special teams concerned with safety and health needs of the organization. Such teams are responsible for the safety of the workers and are supposed to brainstorm potential challenges and put in place pre-emptive measures before accidents can happen. Effectiveness and efficiency are core to the prevention of accidents in the work places. HR managers should utilize resources such as man, machine, material, method, money and environment and technology to enhance safety in the work place.

The above measures are not possible unless the organization embraces good communication process amongst staff members. The support of top management is also very central to the success of the safety measures. Some policies require substantial amount of funds to implement, something that depends on support from the top management. Finally, the HR manager should have in place, compensation policies for victims of workplace accidents when they happen. The general accident preparedness in the work place in U. S is commendable but there is a need for improvement.

Human Resource Managers play a big role in ensuring that the organization conducts its activities in ways that promote the safety, health, well being of the employees and the environment. The HR should continuously devise ways of reducing risks in the work place by ensuring that the work place conditions meet the requirements of the occupational and safety as well as other industry policies and procedures. There is a need to ensure that employees are trained on how to cope with work place accidents.
