Boeing is an American worldwide enterprise aerospace company that is leading manufacturer of commercial jetliners, defense, space and security systems, and service provider of aftermarket support. They employ more than 140,000 talented, skilled and innovative people across the United States and in more than 65 countries worldwide. The company is organized into three business units: Commercial Airplanes; Defense, Space & Security; and Boeing Global Services.

Prior to all of Boeing’s success of were that are today the company was formed in 1916, who responsible for responsible for the development of the single-engine, two-seat seaplane called the B;W. Boeing was founded by William E. Boeing who was an American timber merchant at the time prior to the Boeing name.

William E. Boeing founded Aero Products Company after he and his friend Conrad Westervelt, who was a U.S. Navy officer built the B;W. In 1917 Aero Products Company was renamed to Boeing Airplane Company, which is the company that built flying boats for the Navy during World War 1. They also sold the plains to its trainers, pursuit planes, observation craft, torpedo planes, and patrol bombers to the U.S. military in the 1920’s and 1930’s.

In 1920’s Boeing expanded into the airmail services, which enabled the company to add transport to their corporation which encompassed both the manufacturing and the airline operation. In 1931 Boeing combined four smaller airlines under its ownership into their companies new name United Airlines.

United Airlines was short lived with the smaller airlines under wing, since the Air Mail Act of 1934, which required that the aircraft manufacture not be associated or own the air transport companies. United Airlines split and became three companies, which we know today as Boeing, United Technologies Corporations and United Airlines.

Boeing is a company that believes that global business enables them to drive their growth and secures their leadership position now and in and future. Their global reach that includes customers in approximately 150 countries and employees and operations in more than 65 countries.

They have manufacturing, service and technology partnerships with companies and governments worldwide and contracts with more than 20,000 diverse suppliers and partners. They invest in partnerships with the worlds companies and research institutes, which enables them to capture the emerging opportunities, establish long-term relationships and win new business.

Boeing also has eighteen regional offices in key global markets outside the U.S. , that is responsible for developing the company’s growth and productivity initiatives outside the U.S, by forming new business and industrial partnerships, overseeing international affairs and giving a local presence while providing global functional support.

Why I selected Boeing

I chose Boeing for my second case study, because have always been marveled by that ideas of avionics and what sacrifices and/or sleepless night and time it has taken to get where we are today. The technology that has been developed from the time the first powered flight was flown by the Wright brother that made the first sustained, controlled, powered heavier-than-air manned flight for four miles on December 17, 1903 and prior to that other had been attempting flight to where we are now is just amazing. Boeing does a great job taking their vision and making it a reality.

The Mission

Boeings mission statement, which is also there vision is "People working together as a global enterprise for aerospace industry leadership." Boeing takes a multi-faceted approach to achieving its vision and strives to embody certain values, not only as individual employees, but throughout the company in its entirety.

Goals/Needs

Boeings goals for 2018 are to deliver between 810 and 815 commercial airplanes in 2018. Which means that they would have to complete one plane every eleven hours. Their goal by 2025 is; market leadership, top-quartile performance and returns, growth fueled by productivity, design, manufacturing, services excellence, accelerated innovation, global scale and depth, best team, talent and leaders and top corporate citizen.

Boeing is committed to its set of core values that not only define who we are, but also serve as guideposts to help us become the company we would like to be. And they strive to live the values every day, which are; integrity, quality, safety, diversity and inclusion, trust and respect, cooperate citizenship and stakeholder success.

Challenges/Shortfalls

Boeing is just like many companies out there, challenges happen and companies need to work through those challenges to stay successful. With all well-planned projects there maybe setbacks and delays, but how the customer deals with those delays as the happen is the key. With the majority of all Boeing project they failed to hit their target date, cost and sometimes quality.

Boeing’s process exists but there are informal and are not properly characterized, meaning that the employees have the basic understanding, but do not interact with their leader, or managers to try to improve the work being done. Boeing was looking for a replacement for the 767 and the 737 which were named the 787 Dreamliner and the 737max. For the 787 Dreamliner they wanted it to be twenty percent more fuel-efficient and to have electrical flight systems, raked wingtips, and noise-reducing chevrons on its engine nacelles.

With Boeing’s 787 Dreamliner there was a quality control issue with the Roll-Royce Trent 1000 engine flaw that could have been avoided if Boeing would have checked that quality assurance control was done on design, parts, training, vendors and contractors.

The Engines have a flaw with corroded turbine blades in the hot rear section of the engine, which has cased trouble for Boeing with the public’s belief in airplane and jet-engine safety, Boeing is also losing money due to the planes sitting waiting for the engines to be place back after they have been replaced.

With the 737 Max 8 they expected to have a fuel bure that was sixteen percent lower and ten to twelve percent more efficient with the new Leap-1B, there was also improvements to aerodynamics and structural changes and other improvements from the other improvements.

With Boeing’s 737 Max 8 there was a quality control issue with faulty sensor information from the Angle of Attack Sensor and the new Maneuvering Characteristics Augmentation System for 737 Max 8 on October 29, which caused the crash of the 737max 8 that could have been avoided if Boeing would have checked that quality assurance control was done on design, parts, training, vendors and contractors. The faulty sensor fed the angle of attack false information about the plane’s nose.

The sensor replaced prior to the crash and if so, was it installed correctly and inspected for quality assurance, was the sensor inspected before installing?

The new Maneuvering Characteristics Augmentation System for 737 Max 8 was supposed to help pilots avoid accidentally raising the nose too high, was the training done correctly for the new system, was the information in the fight maual and if so, were the pilots trained to deal with this kind of situation? Boeing must ensure that Quality Control is being performed in the areas of; overall design, parts related to what is manufactured, vendors, contractors and subcontractors, release needed information for products produced and the training for employees and pilots

Decision Making

Boeing must ensure that Quality Control assurance is being performed which include the project personnel, quality communications, quality assurance surveillance, subcontractors and suppliers, project quality specifications, inspections and tests, control of nonconformances and project completion inspections.

Who is the designated quality manager? When are will the project start-up meeting and routine production meetings where you will discuss quality issues? What is management will be doing to monitor overall project quality and how they will make sure that the project quality controls are running the way that they should?

What criteria do you use to select your suppliers and subcontractors? What is the quality control plan specifications require you to submit procedures for conducting task inspections? Ensure that everyone understands that from time to time things go wrong in construction.

Also, Boeing must ensure that Quality Control assurance in the areas of their projects and to fix their short falls on sticking to the schedule, they must stick to the scope of work and the management plan schedule that they proposed and leave some wiggle room in the schedule in case delays happens. Boeing needs to look at their triple constraint of project management when planning for a project, having milestones is a critical thing and helps in identifying the necessary activities and are useful for setting schedule goals and monitoring the progress.
