When I moved to the United States, some of the cross-cultural communication issues that I faced were language and culture. The most difficult was the language barrier as learning another language appeared to be very difficult as I didn’t know how to communicate and to express my ideas without. I was afraid of making mistakes and I often felt embarrassed communicating with native speakers.
One more issue was cultural peculiarities as I had to learn new customs that were so different from my culture and I had to adapt to these new customs. Additionally, I think that every person who is willing to get job abroad with a firm in the U.S. with local branch of a foreign-owned firm will definitely face these issues as there will be a necessity to deal with different cultures, beliefs and customs.
- Nestle, the largest food company in the world, requires personnel of the director level and above to work for 3 years in a different country. The U.S. headquarters is about 3 miles from me in Glendale, California within Los Angeles County. The employee is “assigned” by Nestle to the country and does not have say as to which one. The company provides language lessons to the employee and expects that the employee “hit the ground running” and be able to be a director in the foreign, manage staff, meet profit goals, etc. What do you think about this policy? Would you want to work for a company that does this? What about your family members, how would they cope with a move to a foreign country for only 3 years?

I think that this policy works to the advantage of Nestle as it promotes fostering cultural diversity at a high level in its workforce. But the main reason I am not willing to work for Nestle is statement that that the company is ‘assigned’. From the employees’ perspective, the work environment seems too restrictive with its upward flow. I would also have a hard time accepting the job if I had a family.
