of American education. Why Should Business Be Concerned? The reason for business concern is that corporations have seen a steady decline of skilled workers. Why is this such a horrible event? CEO’s have noticed that due to the lack of skilled workers, over 70% of CEO’s acknowledge a decrease in company earnings due to poor or under skilled workers. Almost half of all CEO’s surveyed complained that they were dissatisfied with the quality of their job applicants. Many applicants cannot read or lack sufficient work habits to survive in the business industry. Businesses need people are very competent and can perform basic skills in order to run as successfully as possible. Preparing Non-College-Bound Students for Employment Along with the last point, it is essential that we train our high school students in these same areas because many do not go to college or even graduate from high school.

Many ways to improve upon this is to monitor through apprenticeships along with more intensive basic skills training. These are just a few ways to bridge the gap between school and work. One way to do this is to have business leaders come in and teach these skills much in a manner similar to the way corporations train large numbers of new staff members. Education and the Changing Nature of Employment in the U.S. Our society has gone through major changes in the economic system over the past 50 years. We have moved from an agricultural revolution, through a manufacturing revolution, to what is known as service jobs. The service area deals with primarily in the health and medical technology fields. We have seen a drastic rise in “white collar” jobs and a decline in “blue collar” workers over the same period. All of this indicates that better schooling is needed for our children to prosper in the changing world. It’s a basic fact that typically the more educated you are, the more opportunity for financial stability. Democracy, Capitalism, and the Business of Education According tot the text, our strength as a nation lies in our democracy and availability of free enterprise.

In its basic sense, our country has thrived from what was once known as a minor colony to a major economic power in the world. All of this has been accomplished in part because of our business/educational ties. In order to maintain our edge, we must keep this partnership going strong by incorporating more of an economic sense in our education. Business Approaches to School Operation Basically, according to the text, if a typical school system was a “business” it would have been shut down many years ago. The business approach to schools would be to downsize the support staff because there is no evidence to support students learn better in smaller settings. Also, the money that typically is used for teacher salaries would be used to upgrade technology and improve student skills. School districts are very costly to communities and in many instances are not held accountable for their educational principles. If technology was used in an innovative way, a teacher could ”get his/her point across” to the masses instead of to smaller groups.

Also a great deal of money is spent on administrative salary when in fact a contract with a private firm would save money and be just as useful. Another area where business would differ is that teachers have tenure and are protected. Using Business Principles Schools can be a major waste of space and money when it comes down to it. Many smaller districts could be reorganized into regional facilities if business concepts were applied. Along the same lines, schools could train a large number of “employees” by use of various computerized systems. Basic skills can be taught to a larger number of people in facilities that can be used year round, which most schools are only used about 8-9 months a year. This could dramatically help curb large costs incurred by local school districts, which could help form a bond between the business sector and educational sector of our society. Position 2: Limit the Influence of Business Businesses have had a negative public perception as far as ethics are concerned and they have no place in deciding how schools should be run.

A majority of businesses would be out for themselves in the first place. If this were to happen, most businesses would use the taxpayers’ money to facilitate the education of students toward their own principles. A Corporate Model for Schools Using business to help school reform would sacrifice several variables that our children learn in school each day. Things such as human values, protection of the environment, and safety are just a few of the concerns that business in education would likely omit because of the business overall “bottom line” approach. Many times a business is more concerned with a simple standardized test score to determine the best employee instead of weighing out the differences in personalities and subtleties of human behavior. In a system such as this, industry controlled, a business would control the entire school curriculum because of its many ways to manipulate the wages, benefits, labor contracts, and profits.

The Notorious Contributions of Business to Civilization The past history of business has not been known to a model to guide in our education systems. There is a major black eye in the history of business that leaves a trail of corruption in everything from child labor to the very minimal pay to migrant workers. American schools have been influenced by business since the beginning of the 20th century and since then, schools have lost their sense of being. The primary existence of schools was to socialize America. Now, due to the business influence, schools are becoming more of an indoctrinating system that is more suited towards business. The workers are used for profit, and rarely are ethics a concern. School Reform and Business Interests School reform is supposed to be along the lines of having the students learn as equals and instilling justice in society. With business playing a major role in the reform, this cannot be recognized. Business tries to pursue public education because it can educate competent and compliant workers.

One example of this is through work study programs instituted at George Washington Carver High School In Atlanta, Georgia. This, in effect, places business in the center of school reform. Is Business a Good Model for Schools? In the 90’s, our students have shown the truth of just how much business has influenced education. It seems to be a win at all cost society. People seem to want to better themselves monetarily no matter what the consequences. This practice happens in all facets of life. Just one example of this is sporting people are using performance enhancing drugs to “one up” the competition. This is not limited to small corporations. This is also the pattern of big business, Chrysler and Lockheed are two examples. (The book does not mention Enron or World Com, but you can add them to the growing list) Needless to say, business is definitely no the place to look when you are wanting to look at a model ethical system.

Educational and Social Consequences of a Corporate Takeover Taking over of a school like a corporation would completely change the entire system. It would basically benefit only those going into business, and it would teach those not going to college skills that they would not necessarily need. Business wants people who are trained to do a job and not trained thinkers. Business leaders want what they call “company men”, which is basically people who are not going to “rock the boat” and will do whatever is asked of them. Many times a job candidate who seems to have his own opinions, may be passed over for a promotion or passed over for a job because he is more confrontational than another. Business wants people who agrees with the notion that what is good for business is good for all. Many states require a “free enterprise” course instead of an economics course.

Also, students in various courses are learning things from how to fill out and application in English to learning how to make change in a math class. Business continues to complain about what is being taught in schools, yet business has a major impact on our education system. Basically, schools teach what business wants them to teach, when they should be teaching what society wants. My Opinion: In our society, there are major influences everywhere that seem to know what is best for our schools. However, our administrators and teachers who work in the school each and everyday have a very little say, if any, in the education of our children. Business just happens to be one of those influences trying to get its fair share. I do not think a school setting should be influenced at all in the everyday running of a school.

Instead of a school system or school by itself catering to a business, it is the job of a business to cater to the schools. They must work with our product just as we, consumers, have to work with theirs. Schools would be much better off without the influence of business. Business creates an atmosphere that gives us the win at all costs attitudes. Everyone does not have to “win” to be considered successful. Schools would be much better off if the politicians and the business leaders would stay out of them and worry about their own problems in their own industry.
