Business Research Plan Essay
Established as a small health care facility in 1985 by the name of The Macon Hospital, offering accommodations only to a handful, in need of quality medical care, in the ensuing years has evolved into The Medical Center of Central Georgia (MCCG), offering 603 beds and is ranked the second largest hospital in the state of Georgia serving an estimated population of 750,000 residents.
This facility which started in a two story residence began to thrive under the dynamic leadership of its first administrator Olin H. Weaver, M.D, gradually evolved into wards and operating rooms and today stands to serve nearly eighty percent (80%) patients of Georgia’s one hundred and fifty nine (159) counties. (The Medical Center of Central Georgia, 1997)
The Medical Center of Central Georgia (MCCG) also serves as a nonprofit organization with an active partnership with the Secure Health Plans of Georgia, and also as a teaching hospital supporting training programs at Mercer University School of Medicine in various fields such as internal medicine, pediatrics and gynecology.
The Medical Center of Central Georgia (MCCG) is committed to quality service and has also earned 5 star national ratings in three of its programs namely cardiac care, orthopedics and neurology. It is evident that in order to maintain these standards MCCG has to remain active in conducting research in various areas. (The Medical Center of Central Georgia, 1997)
The basic objective of this research plan is to outline the active research areas under The Medical Center of Central Georgia (MCCG) and to further suggest the fields in which more research is required.
The Medical Center of Central Georgia (MCCG) along with its affiliates carries out research projects with the aim of quality and efficient service to its patients. Some of them are outline below.
In collaboration with the Mercer University, The Medical Center of Central Georgia (MCCG) is involved in conducting research trials by combining the facilities of the hospitals with the academic support of the university. These studies involve patients of the MCCG as research protocols under the Institutional Review Board for Human Subject Research (IRB). Data is collected through physical intervention, for example by drawing blood and also through manipulation that is focus groups, surveys and via questionnaires. Moreover, there is an efficient system of working implemented through the regularly updated and maintained records, minutes, meetings and other files. (WHAT CONSTITUTES RESEARCH , 2006)
The cancer center at The Medical Center of Central Georgia (MCCG) is determined to provide its patients the latest advances in cancer treatment through research by offering almost 80 clinical trials. This is done due to partnerships with various research groups to ensure better treatment for different tumor sites including lung, breast and prostate cancer. The efforts of the cancer center towards dedicated participation in research were recognized in 2007 when it received the award for American Society of Breast Surgeons Mammosite Registry. (Cancer Services, 2005).
It is due to the commitment of MCCG towards research and technological advances that recently on February 20, 2008, the first robotic assisted heart surgery was performed by Dr. Rick Harvey at this hospital. This complex procedure can now be more easily performed by doctors using the new da Vinci Surgical System and the “intuitive” EndoWrist instrument which provides flexibility due to its ability to mimic the hand and wrist movement of the surgeon. (MCCG Performs First Robotic-Assisted Heart Surgery, 2008)
The Medical Center of Central Georgia (MCCG) in partnership with the Mercer University is also joining in National IMMEDIATE trial, June 10, 2008, as to check for a “GIK” (Glucose, Insulin and Potassium) treatment. This would be done in order to investigate and evaluate if this intravenous elucidation can prevent or minimize the probability of heart attacks. If victorious, this inexpensive treatment will help save a huge number of lives if used in ambulances on patients who are a victim an ongoing heart attack. (Macon, Georgia Participating in National IMMEDIATE Trial, 2008)
As we have seen that the current research activities carried out by The Medical Center of Central Georgia (MCCG) mentioned above are more dedicated towards technological advances, along with research in current diseases and their cure. However, along with keeping pace with the above mentioned research practices, in my opinion more research should be conducted in the area of hospital facilities as well. So that the hospital can better understand what exactly the patients want and in what specific areas the hospital is lacking. In this way the hospital can provide better value to customers and also reduce its unnecessary costs.
The research should encompass the human subjects worth of consideration for the up gradation of human welfare. It should be an interactive research comprising workshops and training sessions for the motivation and guidance of the workers and volunteers. Hence while it is important for the hospital to keep itself updated with the new outbreaks of various diseases and their cure, research can also be made more effective to provide better satisfaction to its patients at lower cost which in the end is the basic objective of the Medical Center of Central Georgia.
