Happiness Essay Examples

The true definition of happiness is perceived in different ways. As individuals, we have our own definitions of what happiness means to us. It can be seen as an emotion, a mental state, or a journey throughout life. Our personal happiness can also influence others around us. We can find happiness when having experiences with others. Choosing happiness together leads us to love and care for one another. The way we perceive our lives is crucial to how we react, behave, and tackle things that happen.

Happiness is a choice, we have the ability to choose when to be happy, and it is important because it is how we perceive our everyday lives. Throughout life, we choose to create expectations for ourselves and believe that our end goal will bring us happiness. According to Dan Gilbert, “Natural happiness is what we get when we get what we wanted, and synthetic happiness is what we make when we don’t get what we wanted.” Gilbert is implying that we can make our own happiness with the choices we make. We strive to reach our expectations in order to obtain the feeling of happiness. We have the power and right to make choices for ourselves, and we choose what we believe is best for us. In addition, author Benjamin Wallace mentioned a study in his speech about wine: participants were asked to drink wine from two bottles. Each was labeled at different prices but secretly the bottles were the same.

Scientists constructed an MRI brain imaging during the study, which revealed that the participants ended up enjoying the expensive wine more (Wallace). As they were drinking, their brain had experienced more pleasure. Besides the fact that there was no difference between the wines but the price tag. Benjamin Wallace wanted to prove that people are convincing themselves that their choice is better because of how expensive it was. The participants felt a sense of happiness because they convinced themselves that their choice was the one they liked the most, and what was the overall best one. The way we psychologically think can show how we are able to create our own happiness through our choices and convince ourselves that what’s best for us is the right decision. People nowadays choose to be surrounded with more happiness and joy, although others may choose sadness. Author Eric G. Wilson argues that there is a vital need for sadness in the world and says we’re missing out if we medicate it away (Wilson). Wilson is saying that we need to accept sadness in our society. Medicating it away would make it more difficult to deal with our problems head-on. Wilson further states, 'To get to know your partner, your spouse, your friend fully, you really have to find a way to embrace the dark as well as the light. Only then can you know that person,' (Wilson). Wilson says that we can create or build relationships with others when we chose to be open and accepting. We can witness others at their best and worst state, and this allows us to connect with others and become relatable. There must be a balance between, as it will allow us to learn valuable lessons in life.

Happiness involves us being able to forgive ourselves and become more optimistic than we were before. Happiness can be reached when we choose to do what we love when we are constantly thinking and focusing on what matters most. Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi talks about being in the state of flow. When we are completely engaged in an activity that we are doing and we are happy. Our challenge and skill levels are higher than our average, which keeps us motivated. Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi stated that “A person can make himself happy, or miserable, regardless of what is actually happening ‘outside,’ just by changing the contents of consciousness.” Csikszentmihalyi is stating that we can allow ourselves to be happy, or miserable, based on how our mindset is. We have control over our own reactions to situations and we see how it benefits us as individuals.

People are expected to become more happy and positive when they find others who have things in common with them. Our happiness involves doing what we want to be happy, and relating with others can enhance how we perceive happiness. Happiness may be more complex than we think, but it can be gained and perceived in different ways. Everyone has different experiences with happiness, how they take it may be different from how someone else may react and learn from it. But what we all strive for, is to be want to be happy with our lives, and ourselves. Our mind controls the way we think, feel, and act towards one another. We have complete control and allowance of choosing how to feel and process certain situations in our life. Being happy and positive can allow us to realize new things that we may not have noticed at first and that we must not hold onto negativity. Achieving the perfect state of happiness is to learn from our experiences, make the right choices, and have control of how we feel and process everything.
