Stress and Resources:- I have personally experienced stress throughout the process, even though I have previously worked with people who have had dementia , I needed to improve my knowledge to ensure the service I deliver could meet the individuals needs. There were a few cosmetic changes needed to the individuals room and I needed to ensure funding and resources for the improvements. Fear: – There was a fear of the unexpected but as the individual had lived at the home for arrears I felt it was unfair to move him.

We had a meeting with everybody involved in the individuals care and discussed strategies to put in place. The individuals care manager reassured everybody that if the individuals needs became to challenging then he would have to be reassessed as to his suitability for the home I manage. Some of my staff expressed fear that someone with dementia would be totally confused and would display behaviors that challenge. I reassure my staff that if the individual became to difficult/challenging to manage within our home then he would then be reassessed as to his suitability for our home.

The only problem was we don’t have a vacant room, and the only possibility would be to have a best interest meeting with the care manager for the service user who occupies the downstairs room to see if it was a possibility for him to change. I have already put the costing in to head office for woo new bathrooms with suitable baths that have bath chairs which will benefit not only the individual with dementia but all the service users in my care, as their needs are changing as they get older.

The garden fence has already been replaced and we have a keypad entry and exit system so the individual would not be able to wander off without staff escort. We are now waiting for the work to commence. All the service users’ relatives have been informed of the work that will be carried out. I have found that by keeping everybody informed about planned works/ changes is best practices and avoids unnecessary conflicts.
