Chosen professional interview

The interviewed person is HR specialist of a medium-size trading company, which is just entering the market. Thus, the main objective of HR specialist at this point of time is to hire professionals that would ensure company’s success on the market and would enable it to take desired position and gain necessary share of the market. The person is male 41 years old.

The person I interviewed was very calm and friendly. The thing that I admired about the person is that he was very confident, which is characteristic of true professionals. Another prominent feature about my interviewee was his calmness and openness. He was answering all the questions I asked with such an enthusiasm, as I was an important person or someone crucial for the deal, not a simple curious person. This openness and easygoingness disposed me towards this man immediately, which predetermined success of the conversation we held and enabled me to found out much information about this person. Particularly, the interviewee told me that he studied engineering in college and worked for many years as an engineer in a construction company. However, later on he decided to start his own business – developing company.

That was the first time he really penetrated into the problem of human resources management. He selected and interviewed candidates himself. Gradually, he had to face other problems related to HR management, such as appropriate motivation of own employees and their career development. That was a hard task to retain people, yet, it was a good challenge that predetermined the future career pass of my interviewee. He started to learn more about HR, human psychology, effective communications. Books and practical experience became the main sources of training for my HR specialist. He told that he made many mistakes, yet, he learnt the right lessons. Later on, the interviewee was offered a position of strategic counselor at the chemical corporation.

(He sold his business and invested money). It is at this company that he developed and mastered his own skills in HR. It is here that he decided to develop his career in HR and never regretted about this decision. “HR management is similar to art – you have to know the right approach to people, you motivate and build their careers as a sculptor makes his masterpiece starting from the scratch”. Later, he took some courses in HR in order to systemize the knowledge he got. However, the most important source of experience remains the practical activity. Nowadays, my interviewee is responsible for recruiting and developing career paths for the newcomer company, which is twice responsible and twice as difficult. Yet, he is sure that with his substantial baggage behind the shoulders he would definitely succeed. It is interesting that my interviewee told that his career path was quite difficult, since he made mistakes and corrected them. Yet, when I asked if he wanted to change something, he responded negatively. “Hardships makes us stronger, challenges form our character and contribute to our professionalism”. Those words sit in my memory forever.

He told that no school could give as much as vital communication, meeting with people, discussions etc. The most challenging in HR, according to my interviewee, is to find the right approach to a person, to help him open all his talents and skills, become a part of the team. Yet, at the same time, there is no more rewarding that seeing a person you’ve hired progressing in his career, motivated and happy. Such people are my interviewee’s “masterpieces”. The most important things that my HR specialist gained from his profession are tolerance, insightfulness, creativity and easygoingness. Those are features that were gained during many years of experience. Moreover, he noticed that in HR there are no set templates, as each person is individual, peculiar, not like others. The main secret of successful HR management constant and effective communication with subordinates, chiefs, colleagues.

The goal of my interview was to find more information about the person himself and his professional duties and may be even hints he could give, what I actually did. Therefore, it was important to establish collaboration between two of us in order to create comfortable relationships – one of the main criteria of interview’s success. Thus, I have chosen a strategy of attentive listener. I also tried to reflect on my interviewee’s words as much as possible. It helped me to prove that the information I tried to get as the result of this interview was really important for me. Moreover, being an attentive listener and actively reflecting on the words I heard, I also showed the respect and care towards my interviewee, which is an alternative way to establish collaboration relationships.

Another important thing to clarify concerning the interview held is the roles each played. The role of my interviewer was the one who is a highly qualified professional who knows a lot about the sphere he operates in. Moreover, it was necessary to remember that many times before he was the one who asked questions. Thus, he knew many tricks, as well as hints how to conduct the interview. His second role is a man with a status, the one worth respecting. My role, in turn, was a role of a curious personality thriving to perfect ownself getting to know more information about human resources management in general, and the way it is possible to succeed as an HR manager. As for the setting of the interview, it was chosen quite appropriately, since it contributed to the overall positive atmosphere of the conversation. The room was a conference room, a little too large for two people, yet, it was light and comfortable with much space, so neither one of us felt restricted somehow by physical environment. Moreover, the distance between two of us was also big enough, so we didn’t interfere in each other’s private space. This kind of setting played substantial role in the development of the interview, since it enabled both me and my interviewee to feel free and be frank and enthusiastic.

Generally, I am quite satisfied with the interview I held. I was very pleased how it actually started, since I feel empathy on behalf of my interviewee. Yet, I was a little angered later on, when he continued talking about his former jobs and different challenges he survived, as it didn’t relate to the core of the conversation. I became puzzled when he told he sold hi own business and became a hired manager. I thought it was not the logical thing to do. That was exactly the essential part of the interviewee, in which the interviewee told his motives and reasons that made him choose this career path. Furthermore, I was absolutely intrigued when my interviewee noticed that he didn’t have specialized education. I wondered how it was possible to succeed without appropriate academic background.

Generally, the interviewee was very productive, since I not just learnt to fight my fear and hold effective conversation, but also learnt much about HR management. Now, I know that HR is a constant work on me. In order to succeed, it is important to be not afraid of challenges – they are the right way up, as well as to communicate constantly, because there is no problem that cannot be sold, as well as no success can be enhanced if it is not rewarded appropriately.
