Communication within groups. Essay

Communication in groups is a very important factor to determining its effectiveness. There are three main types of communication in group namely; one-way communication, one-way communication with feedback and two-way communication. In the one way communication, the sender of the message basically makes announcements to a group and the receivers are passive (do not communicate views or feedback). This kind of communication is tricky because its effectiveness dependant on variables like presentation of the message, tone of voice, mood of the recipients and sender among others.

Although this communication is less time consuming and convenient to the sender it is frustrating and unsatisfactory to recipients hence inefficient. The second type of communication is more of coercion. This implies that the leader gives a message and stays on to receive feedback from the employees on whether they have correctly received the message. The nature of this communication is some what passive since the group members believe that the leader’s position is correct and unchallengeable and as soon as they understand the correct message they accept it regardless.

This kind of communication is also frustrating and unsatisfactory to group members and is mostly used in assigning tasks or teaching skills. Often, informal communication is

needed to understand and complete task efficiently. The two way communication is the most effective kind of communication in groups. Here, communication is two-way in that the group members give their opinions or suggestion and also the leader gives his. Deliberation and free exchange of ideas takes place in productive and mature way until each idea is exhausted and resolved.

The minorities in the group are encouraged to air their views and generally voluntary participation in exchange of opinions. Of course, disagreements are present at these times as resistance to exchange, doubt and fear are evident. These should be identified and resolved as fast as possible. This type of communication tends to be less frustrating and more satisfying for group members even though it can be really time consuming and frustrating to the leader. However, in the long run it pays dividend since motivation and productivity is high and the leaders focuses less attention into resolving resistance from among the group members.
