In the country there is very little production of hardware however he pointed out the efforts have been made to attract more foreign investment towards this sector and for this purpose the project of Dubai Silicon Oasis (DSO) is initiated by the government investment.
DSO resemble the free trade zone but it is meant to meet a specific goal and that is to develop a technology park in the country where different activities related to the innovation, research and development of computer hardware could be performed. Jonathan D. Peterson further explains that the situation of the software development is also not very encouraging in UAE and at present Dubai internet city is the only main center where software are produced and apart from DIC there are no renowned platform where the developers can work for the software development.
As far as the situation of internet is concerned Jonathan D. The establishment and successful operations of the firms like Emirates Air, Thuraya Satellite Telecommunications Company, Dubai Aluminum Company (DUBAL) and many more shows that in the country the background is well prepared for the promotion of computers and IT in the businesses and there is favourable environment for computer usage in the firms of UAE. The study also indicated some barriers that hinder the increased use of computers and IT tools in UAE businesses.
These barriers include lack of adequate technology infrastructure, little research and development work done in the IT sectors of the country, low rate of literacy, language barriers and lack of awareness in the people regarding the importance of computers and IT for the businesses. Despite all these barriers the role of the government to promote IT in the businesses of UAE is praised by many of the researchers.
Janeta Novakovic (2006) noticed that the government of UAE has shown its commitment towards the IT promotion in the country through some very remarkable steps including the establishment of the forums that promote IT in the region like the holding of Information Technology Governance Assurance forum ITGAF in Dubai at annual basis and many other forums where the businesses representative and government officials meet and discuss the problems and their solution regarding the spread of computer and IT use in the country specially in the business world.
The information technology report on UAE (2005) informed that the government is taking reforming steps to encourage the use of IT in the businesses and as a result of the steps to promote the IT market it is expected that the total size of IT market of UAE that was US$1. 3bn in 2005 will become over US$2. 6bn by the year 2010. The report also explained that there is great possibility and expectations that the use of computers and IT will increase in the business sector of UAE and it will significantly improve the performance of various sectors like financial, oil and gas as well as non oil sectors.
