Congressional fundraising for political campaigns Essay

Congressional fundraising for political campaigns

In the fast moving world we live in today, it is no doubt that politics has moved from what it was in past centuries to an expensive venture that gulp millions of money. This had led to alternative means of seeking for funding. The assistance from the government is no doubt a relief to parties and candidates that does not have the financial will power to finance their dreams of becoming a leader to his people. Nations of the world are coming up with various systems to assist political parties in proper funding of their campaign so as to give all parties and their candidate a level playing ground to contest against each other.  This put every contestant on the same level.

Sometimes, government funding of political campaign would be put under scrutiny for either over funding their party if they are in power. Also it has been used as a means of converting public money for personal use.

Certain occasions where individuals have donated to parties, it has been discovered that the source of such finance are stolen from the coffers of the public funds. This is common in some countries in Africa. It then suggested that

there should be measures of combing this menace.  Although the intentions of these systems are geniue, they some times get through the wrong channel.

In America, the most developed country in democracy, funding political campaigns have also been a major discuss amongst most decision makers. The inability of some political parties to successfully finance their campaign and candidates was the reason for the enactment of the first ever Public Funding Legislation in the year 1966.

This funding system would have made the U.S government responsible for the campaigns through Presidential Election Campaign Fund in the U.S. Treasury. This system was cancelled a year later. But not long after, in the year 1971 the congress cane up with similar provision which forms the content of Public Funding System still in effect till today. This fund is generated through redirecting $3 from their federal income tax.

It is obvious that there is declination in the effectiveness of this system as more funds are being raised through other means without necessarily affecting the income of American tax payers. The present political campaigns currently going has indicated that there is more money aside funding from government which the candidates them selves accepted. Barack Obama has expressed his opinion concerning congressional funding as has called for it abolition.

The call for the amendment of this Funding System was not far fetched as Watergate scandal open up issues relating to funding. Bipartisan Campaign Reform Act of 2002 was the outcome of the amendment of the Federal Election Campaign Act of 1971.

The issue of funding has also generated debate as various presidential campaign. In 2000 the Republician presidential candiate agreed to back the bill if it allows for tradtional means of renerating funds. This same year signify a rise in campaign funding from $519 million in 1996 to $629 million in 2000.

Over time the presidential campaign has alsway been a battle of not only specches but the finacial back up each candiates posesses. It was recored that Barrack Obama raised millions of money from the internet.  He also raised money from the sales of his two books that became a national hit. He vowed not to raise money form the political action committes but from small donours.

America is the home of modern democracy, where freedom, equality and fairness resides with full strenght.   Then the limitation placed on the donation from private indiviaduals seems rediculous and undemocratic. The facts are straight and simple. The watergate scandal has demostrated that thre could still be fruad in government founding of political campaigns.

It has been stated clearly that people should be granted the right to freely donate what they desire to whosoever they want without the intervention of the government regulating their desire aim of suppoting their candiates. Also it is important ot note that there are situations where the programs and campaign promises of thie candiates do not appeal to them. The question would then be why do government in the name Federal Election Campaign Act. Although they thought well in coming up with this idea, it is impotant to note the democratic setting which we fing our drlves as moreover the lacadasicla attitiude of the candiates themselves in this modern times. It seems thay prefer to source for funds from other places than from the government.

The impact of free founding will be a relevant concept of democracy which is most relevant to the American state. As its definations goes, the government of the people, by the people and  and for the people. As I will not condem in totality the concept of government assistance in funding campiagns, I also will suggest they make it an open affair with measures to check emergence of corruption and larvish spending will the pertinent issuses shuold be addresed.

I believe the taxpayers money removed can be a good source of funding other project. If the Obamas are raisng millions of dollars from the internet and through books, it means the Bill of sponsoring campign may exist in isolation for a long time. Although it will achieve its aim of reduced spending, congress will still fund political campaign while other sources will be utilized.

In conclusion, the American state as a democratic setting can not alllow it self  be involved in  scandals like the watergate and many more in far countries of the world. Adequate and constant reforms should be made to catch with the modern trend of political fund raising, even though we set the pace in democratic issues. Also America should be allowed to decide whom the want to fund.
