Society influences the work that scientists do. As a result, Cell-u-life wants to create cells for scientific use since society does not permit the use of stem cells for scientific study at this time. You are a scientist working for Cell-u-life Corporation. Your job is to build an artificial cell that can take the place of living stem cells. This cell needs the structures and the functions of a typical cell (reproduce, metabolize, etc.), and it should include all seven characteristics of life. How would you build the cell (structure of the cell), and why would you build it in that way (function of the cell)? How do you know the cell is alive?
Genetic engineering and molecular biology has advanced several folds. Humans have begun to clone genes. These cloned genes can be placed into a cell membrane-like structure and conditions/raw materials (such as transcription factor) should be provided for the mRNA to develop. By creating an artificial cell, scientists would begin to understand how human cells work. Human being would be able to take control of several processes that take place in the industry, such as fermentation by yeast cells. For example, galactose present in the substrate would activate certain genes in the yeast cell, releasing the transcription factor. Once activated, the yeast cells would bring about protein synthesis and multiply. They would then help in fermentation by releasing enzymes. The scientists could know if the yeast cells are alive by the formation of fermented products. The yeast cells contain enzymes that would convert galactose into other products (Rees, 2007 & Randerson, 2007).
