The utilization of credit cards as preferred method of payment over the internet is a growing trend. However, it does not come without the risk of misuse or fraud. Any time a customer enters his personal information, including banking information, on the internet, he risks offering this to persons other than the one intended. Computer crime is on the rise, as many more people are better equipped to hack into data base systems. Many online purchasing companies provide a disclaimer stating that their website is a secure one.
However, due simply to the open nature of the internet, trust amongst those providing personal information over the web is lacking. As noted by Dr. Waqar Ahmad, 67% of those surveyed for his study “feel threatened/concerned over cybercrime” (Ahmad, 2008). This reflects more than have of those surveyed, suggesting a great concern over the potential threat of fraud over the internet. Law makers are continually working toward decreasing credit card fraud over the internet. However, the struggle lies in identifying those at fault and their ways of success in competing credit card fraud.
