Culture and Globalization

The process of globalization is already advancing in the world. Globalization has an important impact on various cultures all over the world. Through the impact of very fast communication and transportation in the world, different cultures now have a chance to interact with each other. This also involves the culture of different societies. Although globalization tends to be centered in the economic and political processes in the world, culture is inevitably affected. Various influences and modes of domination and subjugation may be seen in the process of globalization.

Thomas Friedman’s book The World is Flat posited that the globalization process has given equal opportunities for commerce and competition for various players all over the world. This also means that regional, geographical, and even historical divisions are now becoming irrelevant. These divisions have important aspects on the culture of different countries.

Historical, regional, and geographical divisions play an important part in the culture of the society. As these divisions matter less and less in the international realm, several features of a society’s culture will also change. Economic activities also play an important part of the cultures of society. When poorer societies are exposed to the culture of richer societies, the people there become

exposed to different modes of lifestyle that may not suit their present economic level. This exposure also has an important impact on the way that they view their own situation in terms of their culture and their economic situation.

There are important differences between rich and poor countries that could not be ignored. One good impact of globalization is that poorer countries would have access to information regarding the strategies that rich countries followed in their path to industrialization and progress. This can then help poor countries develop a culture that gives primacy to economic development.

Globalization presents a boon and a bane for culture. There are several issues that have to be dealt with. For one, traditional and indigenous cultures are in danger of subjugation from the dominant popular culture. Globalization brings with it the process of homogenization of cultures all over the world. Diversity is a good thing as it also promotes different views and allows other cultures to be influenced positively. Such diversity may be endangered as a result of globalization.

Another concern for culture and globalization concerns migration and the mobility of people. As people become uprooted from their societies and work in another country, their cultural viewpoints and references clash with the culture that they will be exposed to. Such process might actually be beneficial to the host society and culture of the migrant workers. They can adapt the economic situation and culture of their host country. When they go back to their own societies and cultures, they can then use the lessons they learned from the host country to their own countries. In this way, poorer countries may be empowered to develop their economies.

Globalization will also empower the media further. This means that there will be a greater sharing of movies, literature, and other forms of art all over the world. The only glitch in the system would be that rich countries will have a greater capacity to bring their cultural goods and products to poor countries. Poorer countries would have a slimmer chance to market their cultural goods on a global scale. Globalization, however, will also help in elevating important cultural issues to the consciousness of the world. In this way, more people and countries will be more aware of cultural matters from other countries.
