Political concerns are the basis of decision making because the existence of the same in a given scenario pressures a political leader to provide necessary decisions for its resolution. Basically, the solution of a problem must reflect the ultimate reason why such political concerns occur. The probation office wherein Mary is an employee gives her a lesson that its culture is based on political concerns and not on the mandate of justice and fairness. Mary learned a lesson that the concerns of the majority rules over justice that must be accorded to a few individuals. Decision making in the probation office is blinded political concerns rather than by rational considerations. The fact that Mary is a novice probation officer; it was never a reason to depart from the essence of justice. The case of one person is different and unique compared to others such that the sex offender that is subject of the case must be given a chance before the law. Mary is correct upon deciding that the sex offender must be a given a probation on the basis of the presentence investigation report she had made.
The culture of bias and unfairness beset the probation office wherein the supervisor is Brian. While it is true that Brian must take heed to the call of politics for the concerns of the majority, it is not expedient for him to disregard circumstances that demands fair decision making. Mary is just doing her job based on the principles of justice and equity. Political concerns are necessary only when the basic rights of an individual are never put to risk. After all, the very purpose of decision making based on political concerns is to have a peaceful and harmonious society. With that, peace and harmony starts from the ability of political leaders to serve justice to individual citizens. It is apparently true that Mary learned the culture of one-sided politics in the probation office where she is serving. The decision making of the organization is anchored toward political concerns which do not apply on all cases brought before the probation office.
In general, however, it is proper to take cultural and political concerns in consideration of formal decision making process. In formal decision making process, balance is necessary in order to come up with the proper solution for any kind of problem. The rationale behind the consideration of both cultural and political concerns is careful attention to the uniqueness of each case brought before the probation office. One case is different to another and it is never wrong to carefully consider each case in accordance with justice and equity. Hence, it is not meritorious for the probation office organization leaders to take out into consideration of both cultural and political concerns in its formal decision making processes.
Finally, in the case study given, prediction model cannot solely address the concerns of the sex offender case. There must be a careful consideration on the possibility that the sex offender will not repeat the same mistake in order to balance the solution of the case. Based on the facts given by Mary, the chance of having a wholesome relationship with the 16 year-old girl is enormous such that the supervisor Brian must not jump to the conclusion that the sex offender future actions could be the same with past cases. The political concerns that are made basis on the comments given by Brian on the case could not stand alone without considering the rational matters discussed and reported by Mary to him. Therefore, both cultural and political concerns must be weighed down in making decisions in the said probation office organization.
