Different windows applications Versions
Different windows APIs have been developed with each API making alterations to the previous API. Some of the versions that have been developed include. Win 16 API. Win 16 was one of the earliest versions of Microsoft windows. Win 16 API exist in the files of the OS which include kernel. exe, user. exe and gdi. exe. All this files are generally DLLs. Win 32 is mainly used in latest versions of the windows operating system. It offers compatibility with Win 16 API because it contains functions implemented by the Win 16.
It was introduced as an API for Windows NT and Windows 95 operating systems. Win 32 for 64-bit windows is another version which is implemented on 64 bit platforms (Abrahams, 1996, p. 32). Open source verses commercial software. Open source software is software whose core code is available freely to users and users can modify the code to satisfy there needs. Using open source software has several advantages. One of the advantages is that the core software is free and this helps to cut down the cost of initial capital for a company that is starting.
Open source software competition with Commercial software has enabled commercial software vendors to cut the cost of their software. With the availability of core code of the open source software programmers have been able to add new features and also improve other features like security this has enabled open source software to be more reliable that commercial software. Open source software cuts down the reliance of a user to a single vendor.
Unlike commercial software where a user has to rely on a single vendor to solve software problems, maintain the software and even provide upgrades which can be expensive, open source software users enjoy upgrades of software which is done more frequently. The advantages of commercial software over open source software is that developers of commercial softwares are always available to offer upgrades while in open source software the developers may loose interest of providing upgrades.
In commercial software the vendor has a duty to fix a bug in case it arises while in open source software if a bug arises one has to pay in order to get assistance in fixing the bug. Commercial software developers have a legal obligation to answer any users’ questions pertaining to the software while that is not the case with open source software. This may leave the user of open source software with a number of unanswered questions pertaining the system. Conclusion In our research we have seen the various methods provided by the Win 32 application programming interface.
And mainly we have dealt with a few WEB application packages available that are made available by the WEB browser and we have seen that they are used in WEB applications by invoking remote procedures (http://www. javapassion. com/j2ee/WebApplicationArchitecture_speakernoted. pdf). Our research has also helped us to come up with the various API versions. Lastly we have tried to see the need for using commercial software over Open source software by coming with the advantages and disadvantages of both.
