Environmental Ethics Essay

This paper seeks to emphasize on the importance of nurturing environmentally conscious business atmosphere. It will show that there is no company that can be exempted from environment conservation. It is a responsibility to all companies and an end in itself. Certain ethical spectrums will be debated, for instance, ecocentrism and anthropocentrism.

The study will show how the two schools of thought contrast as well as their connotation in the world of business. In the long run, the two ethical standpoints will be applied to the case study with an aim to disqualify the notion that a company can be exempted from responsibility as far as environment is concerned.

Introduction

Ethical Relativism is becoming a serious issue today where diverse opinions arise from one civilization to the next. It is impressive to note that most businesses are now considering integrating ethical principles with their management policies. In fact, the social responsibility of any company or corporation is nothing else but ethics. They want to feel they are contributing positively to the lives of many and not the other way round. Furthermore, it is good news to note that businesses recognize that success of a business is not only related to the many profits

they make in terms of revenue but also it is how much it can contribute to the environment.

It is useless to have a very lucrative business, making millions and millions of profits and yet it is number one in pollution of the environment. This study seeks to evaluate in particular, certain aspects of environmental ethics and the spectrum of ethical viewpoints associated to it. Therefore, the two fundamental concepts namely, ecocentrism (nature centered) and anthropocentrism (Human centered) will be considered in the analysis of the case study.

The Spectrum of Ethical Viewpoints

It is important to note that stakeholders’ values and their ethical view points are the frames through which they see, understand and judge the world. An organization’s ethical viewpoint will exert a very strong influence upon their environmental policy preferences. It is therefore necessary to take into account an organization’s ethical stance in order to engage in productive policy dialogue with them, or to negotiate policy outcomes with them.

Ecocentrism mainly concerns itself with nature, in other words, it is nature centered. On the contrary, anthropocentrism concerns itself with humans and their well being where it is human centered. One of the extremes of ecocentrism is deep ecology which states that all species have inherent value where humans are just one species amongst many and have no special value compared to other species (Arne, 1973).

Social ecologists will argue that social change must take place prior to any real environmental changes (Desjardins, J. 2000). In addition, humankind needs to change in order to evolve into a society that functions to conserve nature and live sustainably. On the other hand, human welfare ecology holds that human welfare requires that environment be utilized sustainably for the well being of all human family (VanDeVeer, D. & Pierce, C. 1998 or 2002 editions). Some organizations will resort to consequential morality where the future depends on the greatest good for the greatest number. In addition, some policies will be considered as good if they act as a means to an end or if they possess some pragmatic value.

Case Analysis

In the modern world people have got different preferences and it affects the financial choices they make everyday. It is no wonder that consumers gambling in Las Vegas are willing to put their resources to support businesses that are probably not eco-friendly.  As mentioned earlier, anthropocentric persons will prioritize what is pro-human contrary to what ecocentric people would do since they value nature more than anything else. The business cannot be morally neutral by virtue of responding to consumers needs; its social responsibility must be as objective as possible, period.

Their code of ethics in regard to environment should be within principles of common good. Therefore, by considering the needs of consumers is no justification to claim that a business is morally neutral. Again, there is nothing like being neutral as far as ethical responsibility is concerned. Only the actions of animals or people with insane minds or children can be regarded as neutral. No doubt that in the world of business people possess adequate education and professionalism hence it is expected of them to exhibit superb ethical values.

The government should come up with environmental policies that will bar any company to pollute the environment. It should not matter whether it is the largest or whether it gives the government the largest amount of taxes. It is as a matter of principle that all companies be environmentally conscious, including casino.

Conclusion

Indeed, ethical responsibility is an obligation to all parties because it involves concerns about life in general. It encompasses certain fundamental aspects that remain very vital to human life. It is important to note that human life is dependent among many other things in the universe, especially the environment. The world is now taking certain environmental issues very seriously and the need to have international environment policies have been greatly discussed; and not only that, most nations have already implemented these regulations especially in the business world. Yes, let all companies make it their responsibility in ensuring that the environment is safeguarded since this is for the well being of all generations to come.
