In a time that economic pressures are becoming the primary forces shaping the behavior of American newspaper companies, Picard (2004) noted the responses of many managers which are affecting the quality of journalism, that are producing “practices that diminish the social value of news paper content …” (p. 54). Plaisance (2008) cited that the “codes of ethics for journalists, public relations practitioners, and even marketers and advertisers emphasize honesty, transparency, respect, minimizing harm, and public service…” (p.

27). Thus, the media ethics is very important especially in attaining credibility. The The Daily News Bulletin is facing moral and ethical consequences relating to the journalists’ failure to recognize the ethical implications of the particular items that appear on their newspaper. Boeyink (1998) implied that this ethical problem has to do with the journalists’ behavior shaped by the economic pressures confronting business organizations especially the media companies.

Boeyink cited that the lack of researches documenting the effectiveness of codes shaping journalists’ behavior made it difficult to determine what causes such ethical problems committed by the The Daily News Journal personnel. Picard sees the problem on the strategies that publishers are adopting which have made the industry further commercialized, “making commercial considerations equal to or, in some cases, more important than editorial quality or social concerns” (Picard, p. 55). The The Daily News Journal is confronted with this moral, social and ethical issue which is an apparent sacrifice of the quality of media product in exchange of financial gains.

The ethical issues confronting the company has to do with their integrity and credibility as an independent organization whose suppose to be non partisan, balance, fair, trustworthy and credible in their views and perspectives. While this problem is triggered by uncertainties in view of stagnant markets, the looming competition from other media audience attention, the ever more small portions of the population using it, the changes in the advertisers’ media choices, this should not be reason for the company to engage in such practices as it undermines the company’s moral, ethical, and social responsibilities.

Boeyink argues that media companies should create an environment that has a high priority on ethics, and code of ethics must have meaning.

He pointed out however, that the commitment of key leaders to ethical standards is essential to the widespread effect of those standards in the day-to- day news operation. Among this media regulation that media companies in general and The Daily News Journal in particular should adhere is to establishment of the “editorial standards” in which it will reflect the company conduct, policies, and regulations. Furthermore, The Daily News Journal should also be able to meet these requirements in order to deal with all the issues contending the media practice. In order for the company to deal with the relationship among the ethical, moral, and social issues, the company must put higher concern on public service “than self-interests” such as profits (Cornelissen, p. 165), as by putting the public interest above self interests the company can redeem it self from the moral, ethical, and social obligation it has previously overlooked.

Adherence to these requirements can greatly help the company deal with the relationship among moral, ethical, and social issues in the legal context. B. ) Seek to increase competitiveness While media companies are adopting new strategies that may further enhanced their market shares, Picard emphasized that media companies must seek to increase their competitiveness through “vertical and horizontal integration by diversification into other media, by establishing online sites and by developing cross platform activities” (Picard, p.

While this emphasis speaks of what media companies should do to deal among the ethical, social, and moral issues confronting them in view of the negative developments caused by media commercialization, media companies should also establish code of ethics that will serves as guidelines towards their efforts.

The media organization should reflect high degree of professionalism in the media practice which according to Cornelissen (2004) should be characterized by (a) practitioners being guided by professional values in their work, (b) Membership of a professional organization, (c) professional norms that regulate the practice (d) an intellectual tradition underpinning it, and (e) a constant development of technological skills. Although these seems to be overran whelming job, The Daily News Journal should strive it self to meet these requirements in order to deal with all the issues contending the media practice.

According to Picard, the decision of some media companies to promote commercial aspects of newspaper publishing is not intrinsically detrimental to journalism as like any other firms that have economic self-interests, newspaper companies can also attend to them. In the case of The Daily News Journal, the company must deal with the relationship among ethics, morality, and social issues in the legal context by recognizing its public accountability and responsibility.

That is, the company should place more emphasis “on their roles as promoters of public interests and on becoming a trusted institution of society that represented the people” (Picard, p. 55). According to Wilkins and Christians, Media companies must be responsible in providing (1) daily news that is trustworthy; (2) a forum for public expression; (3) inclusive reporting, free of stereotypes; (4) stories that pursue and probe democratic life; (5) universal access to daily news.

Based on these criteria for the media publication, the media organization is expected to deal moral, ethical, and social issues in the legal context with some degree maturity. Thus, The Daily News Journal should deal with the relationship among the moral, ethical, and social issues in the legal context in a way that is trustworthy, that it recognizes and acknowledges the public expression, provides report that is stereotype free, democratic, and access to the daily news.

The maturity spoken of in this section of the paper however, refers only to the manner by which media organization such as The Daily News Journal should respond to the moral, ethical, and social issues contending the media organization. That is, the company should treat these issues professionally, and with proper respect to the ideas behind these issues.
