Firms that Illustrate the Theory X and Theory Y

David’s Cookies best illustrates the Theory X while Mrs. Fields’ Cookie store demonstrates Theory Y management philosophy. Theory X management philosophy believes in force and punishment as the means to handle people, which in turn make them dislike responsibility; all that they do is to earn a living. On the other hand, Theory Y follows the idea of teamwork wherein employees assume responsibility out of a recognized organizational goals and objectives. People here in this principle learn to value work and at the same time enjoy with a unified goals in mind.

Based on the description given, David Liederman is a kind of a manager who does not give his employees much involvement in the process of baking the cookies and shipping them to different stores; the mere responsibility of his employees is to put the dough on a tray and have those cookies baked in seven and a half minutes. Liederman does not show any trust to his employees. The mere fact that Liederman sees chimpanzee as a better employee than the people that he has in the factory is a manifestation that he is suspicious of their sincerity and ability.

the workers to be competitive and better workers. On the other hand, Mrs. Fields is the opposite of Liederman for she manifests confidence and trust to her employees enough to leave much of the jobs to those people in the factory. Hers is a combination of profit and service wherein she lets employees feel some degree of importance and fulfillment in doing their responsibility.

As what can see in the illustration, the store workers do the complete procedure of making cookies out of dough with less supervision. What she does as she noted is to give them simple guidance and support as the president of the business, as she said, “What we really do is … we take of the people. ” She intentionally works her best to make her people become productive by bringing the best of them; as cited, “Fields’ idea is to have her managers out where they can be most useful with employees and customers. ”

Obviously, as goes in the saying, “love begets love,” these two different management styles produce two distinct outcomes, because employees are human beings and are sensitive to their experiences in the workplace. Liederman’s employees as a consequences are less motivated and unhappy with what they are doing for the company, while Mrs. Fields’ employees are more stimulated and productive as well. The fact that Liederman does not interested in the well-being of his workers, this annoys them and make them feel unworthy, and as a result, people would likewise dislike doing sacrifices for the company.

In the case of Mrs. Fields’ employees where they feel privileged, trusted, and important, people will in turn could give what is expected of them or even more. Since they are happy being part of the business, they will exert more effort as if they are one of the owners of that company as a sign of their gratitude.

Therefore, Mrs. Fields’ workers are likely to show honesty and loyalty to the company. Since Mrs. Fields has about 700 company-owned cookie stores while Liederman has franchise stores, it shows that Mrs. Fields could handle the store by herself while Liederman could not, also, Liderman seems to have a lot of physical stress due to his daily work in the factory, and Mrs. Fields is contended and more relaxed as her business grows remarkably. Liederman may also be successful by winning in the cookie-tasting contest, but he would have trouble maintaining the business for lifetime for he is afraid to share what he knows to his people. Whereas Mrs. Fields has greater opportunities for she lets her people do the business for her.
