Focus essay on leadership

Products and services define my company to our customers. To our customers, we are only as good as our current offerings. There was a time when I had an opportunity to serve as a leader in our organization. Considering that my Company was closely dealing with competition, the management style was then a bit focused on how goals and objectives set by the Company are attained and how it impacts its progress. Our Company encounters conflicts that are “rare and transient” and they are usually resolved through setting up activities that manage and resolve problems through effective leadership and control system in conflict management.

Conflict resolutions usually come about after conflicts are analyzed according to antecedents, issue of conflict, parties involved, other parties who may have interests on the issue called for, strategy and tactics used to affect the resolutions thought about, and the likely consequences of the resolutions (Jones, 1997). As a leader, I realize that one essential characteristic of a leader shows up in problem-solving situations. I was tasked to take care of increasing the department’s sales and profits.

I conducted a meeting of the people in the department and we agreed on how to do it. I told them

that if we just look, we will see customers everywhere. That is not always easy to do, especially when a campaign to upgrade customer service may begin with a pronouncement issued from an executive suite and aimed at lower level where the customers are presumed to be. Everyone knows that salespeople need skill at handling customers. I have discovered that there is no separating bottom line from customers.

For them, the skills of customer service and the skills of leveraging the capabilities of others stem directly from the same basic value (Burns, 2001). By collaborative interaction, creative ways to resolve conflicts happen. Better ideas are gained to avoid conflicts in the future. Moreover, making links between goals are obvious ways to patch things up. Linking gaps in between issues or matters that may have caused the conflict to arise is one way of preventing conflicts to take place.

By linking gaps, barriers are mended and indifference between parties is eliminated. The spirit of teambuilding, when fostered, may be developed among individuals so that work is done in unity among parties involved. Having team spirit equates to one’s personal contribution to make the team work effective and efficient. As one helps build a united team and draws personal efforts, talents and skills for the good of the team and everyone in the Company are enhanced. The problems arise and challenges are faced with a more positive approach to make things work (Gewirtz).
