I wanted to find something I could do now that would prolong my brain health.”
He devised several strategies that helped him to be a reigning champion four times. If you are interested in improving your memory just like Dellis, then continue reading as we highlight several of his strategies.
Ensure That it is Exciting
It is typical for us to remember those things in our life, which are extraordinary. You might have heard the question asked, ‘where were you when so and so died?’ ‘What were you doing when this happened?’
According to Nelson Dellis, excitement enhances your brains chances of remembering facts or details. He says life is filled with uninteresting things, 90% of the time. Therefore, the key is to trick your brain into believing otherwise. Images and colors are great stimulants of memory. Associate images with abstract concepts and you will remember them easily.
Make Use of a Memory Palace
The four-time memory champion says that utilizing a memory palace is one of his best techniques. This he says requires that you “create pictures and memorize them along a path through a space that you know well.” This could be your home or school. “You could almost certainly walk throughout with your eyes closed,” Dellis says. “If you want to remember grocery items, link each one to that space. Take it as far as you like. If the next item is milk, imagine a cow spraying milk all over the door. Continue to create mental pictures through your house. When you get to the store all you have to do is think of your house and mentally walk the same path, and the pictures will be waiting for you. ”
Utilize the Linking Method
It is an alternative method for storing images. Dellis states, “A linked list connects each item to the next, so it’s a narrative.” Create a bizarre and exciting story around the task that you have to complete. Therefore, if you have a meeting with the communications department, you can envision that the boss was caught on camera in a secret tryst the night before, and the company needs to issue a statement.
“The more bizarre, over the top, hilarious, or vulgar it is, the easier it is to remember,” says Dellis. “We remember things that are truly out of the ordinary.”
