One week seminar attended by Sally Cooper is aimed at achievement of life time goal to work for humanity which is at highest in providing treatment to emergency patients which carries the above stated objectives. Sally completed this orientation program of intensive care unit (ICU) and was absolutely happy and content to work with veteran nurse of ICU.

After working for a period of seven days, Roni came to an opinion about Sally and began to show incompatibility. This was completely unacceptable whereas a veteran nurse is expected to be courteous and compatible as a guide for new nurses and must provide a complete leadership to the nurses. In fact Roni must encourage Sally to take up more challenged tasks in nursing care and must provide full guidance about emergency department and intensive care unit. The way in which Roni treated Sally is absolutely unkind and discourteous and this is not expected from an experienced nurse. Even on the assumption that Sally may have committed mistakes, Roni must possess an ability to correct mistakes and provide a full length guidance to Sally with the fact that nursing is a very honorable and noble profession although it is a fact doctors during the course of execution and performance of duties, may ask nurses to carryout all purpose of tasks quite quickly and in that scenario, it might appear that nurses have to carryout all sort of jobs whereas this is not true.

Therefore, Roni stands completely at fault and has no right to even converse with Sally who is a new entrant into the nursing profession.   Head nurse should be like a lead, guide and help and even if these are absent, at least there should be courtesy to  deal with subordinates and also with the staff within the working environment. Talking bad of doctors, nurses and other staff is unacceptable and this must be viewed seriously by hospital management in order to ensure that proper chain of communication is initiated within the hospital environment.

Arrange for a meeting with Sally and Roni and consider a complaint letter from both the ends or a verbal presentation in a professional manner and conduct. Basing on the complaints received from both the ends, identify the problem and discuss about it. Sally and Roni both are working for earnings and prejudice has no place in work environment. It is also a fact that at the place of work, only work rules and all other issues are secondary.  Therefore, both Sally and Roni have to be compatible and agreeable at the place of work irrespective of opinions and comments made on each other.

Issuance of reprimand letters to both Sally and Roni stating that each must carry on duties with utmost respect and no personal authority or right is encouraged on one another and both must limit to the extent of work alone and inappropriate language within the premises of hospital is forbidden.

Clear instructions of dos and don’ts to both new nurses and head nurses is important in an orientation program with the fact that personal self-respect is not hurt such as in the case of Sally and shedding of tears makes anyone to feel sorry that at the place of work, if people weep at harassment, the workplace has no respect and in fact loses its reputation with the kind of people employed in hospitals and in nursing homes. Especially places where people look for more care and nourishment, if employees are treated with low morale, medical profession itself  loses its prominence and value. Keeping this fact in view, the orientation program must also view moral standards, professional conduct and also efficiency along with skill and knowledge. All these must be emphasized in orientation program so that both the trainees and trainers do not commit any mistakes either by omission or by commission.
