This paper identifies the main external influences on the Human Resource Management in the Hospitality industry in the UK. Political- Gender equality has also had a significant influence of the industry I that, they have been forced to change their labor policies to reflect equal opportunities accorded to all genders (Walker, 2008). The government charges high amounts of money as taxes to luxurious hotels. This money can interfere with the amount of money the company has and may lead to laying off of some people by the human resource department to cut costs (Lucas, 1995).

Economical- Currently the economic state in the UK is friendly and no signals point to that it may be unstable. The exchange rates are relatively stable and the inflation rates are steady, there is a steady income growth and these are projected to continue in the same way. This means the human resource management can hire people assured that they will be in a position of paying them. This is because the companies are sure that with the necessary input they will be profitable (Hoque, 1999). Social – The health consideration of the prospective customers will also influence them into eating or sleeping in hotels.

in the UK permits one to open a hotel or restaurant as long as the health of the population is not jeopardized. If people feel they are healthier eating from restaurant the will improve sales and the human resource department will hire more people. The language of the people will also matter as it will be necessary to employ someone whose language the local people will understand (Ian and Chris, 2006). In the UK someone fluent in English will be favored to one who is not even if they have the same qualifications. Technological- With the increase in levels of technology many of the actions that man can perform have now been automated.

Technological shifts will also affect the costs, quality and will ultimately lead to innovations. This will push the human resource department into hiring people with the relevant qualifications (Armstrong, 2006). Some restaurants like the Inamo restaurant in London uses virtual menus which are popularly called interactive tables where customers order through the tables. This has definitely led to the laying off of some employees though the same system has led to the hiring of professionals with other qualifications like backend developers (Lucas, 1995).
