Innovation Process Essay

When it comes to innovation, people often say that ideas are easy to produce, the main part is execution. While others also say that innovation needs creativity and hence only creative people are able to innovate. Experience of organizations, however, has revealed that a good process and employees’ ability to learn are required to generate good idea which can be later executed. The employee’s learning process can take place within the organization through the culture of information sharing or outside through value-add partners.

In some situations, however, the innovation being introduced is something unknown and strange to the people. In this case, the innovative idea should be effectively communicated to those affected by it. Hence ideation process includes both creation and successful implementation of idea which meets some underlying business needs. (Graham, 2004)

solutions. At Ford, a new model is not only created by ideas from R&D and Engineering department but some non technical customers also. We can use focus group to gather people from diverse experience and lifestyle to talk about an issue in group format in which the moderator directs the discussion to more specific parts of the issue.

The concerned organization will sit behind the one way mirror and observe the verbal as well as non verbal cues of respondents to get hold of their feelings and views. (Graham, 2004) The customer’s needs or a solution to the problem is often elicited from the discussion. The list of ideas is created which is then prioritized and given weightings. The ideas are then rated against some criteria such as compliance with corporate strategy, technologically feasible, marketable, customer’s preference, cost effective etc. The one which gets highest score is selected for implementation. (Christensen, 2003)

The continuous improvement is an organizational philosophy and it needs changes in organizational culture, structure, mission and strategy so that employees are always motivated to look for loop holes and improve them promptly. If responses from customers over time indicate satisfaction with the company’s product quality, this means that organization is on the track of continuous improvement.
