Knowledge Workers And Data

Knowledge is now an aspect that all businesses have to take into consideration. Becoming the key of success every small business owners, entrepreneurs, executives and managers have to keep up with information in a way or in another to stay competitive. That¡¦s why knowledge worker were introduced in todays businesses. We can ask ourselves what is a knowledge worker; according to my own interpretation, I would define it as being anyone who uses technology and information in any way to help a company, being more competitive and aware of the need and the demand of the moment, which is fundamental for a business. In most of the companies today knowledge workers represent a big part of the workforce.

Lets see from a business perspective what advantages does it bring: $ Most of the knowledge workers already telecommute, which means that they work outside of the traditional office or workplace, usually at home or in a mobile situation using wireless methods of communication to access information and to report to the business office or to interact with fellow knowledge workers. The knowledge worker usually needs only a little capital other than information to be useful, this from a business perspective is very

important and enriching because it allows instant access to the needs of the customers. These new economy organizations are based on ¡§virtual integration rather than vertical integration, interdependence rather than independence and mass customization rather than mass production.¡¨

Another important aspect about knowledge workers is the level of self-initiative given by their employers. ¡§High degrees of individual choice enable knowledge worker to make an individual decision about how to configure an individual work environment within the constraints designated group work setting.¡¨ Initiative and autonomy is a good way to save time, because the time a knowledge worker uses asking question to an expert, not only loose the expert¡¦s time and while he is asking a question but he isn¡¦t working finding relevant information for the company. As we all know in the business world time is money. $ Every company should be aware of the trends and needs of the customers at any time of the year, at any moment. Thats where the knowledge worker becomes useful for the managers. The information he will collect will help them make important decisions.

For an example, ¡§For many hotels, yield management maximizing rates and occupancies is the only way to stay in business.[¡K]You must gather past sales and occupancy information¡Kyou also have to factor weather, any special civic events, airline ticket prices and a host of other information.¡¨ The knowledge worker uses information as a mean of helping its employers to stay in business by being competitive. The amount of information available is growing every year at a point that the whole database is doubling every 5 years. Why should it be good for a company? ƒÙ ¡§The ability of a company to convert their ever-growing amounts of stored data into knowledge and usable information is its key to competitive advantage.¡¨ Since information is growing, there is more data to analyze customer¡¦s demand that allows companies to be more up to date, and to be more competitive. ƒÙ ¡§Thus, IT has many possible effects on organizations, and these effects suggest a considerable positive influence on innovation.

It is important to keep in mind; however, that scholarly literature on this subject is sparse.¡¨ The tremendous amount of information available today and in the future also allow business to keep up with all the innovation their competitor may have and to be able to have access to new the technology on the market. ƒÙ A firm can decide to retain a systematic record of all its interactions with a customer, or all of a given employee’s interactions with customers, for example. As more and more interactions are so mediated, the sophistication of record keeping and record analysis can grow. This offers opportunities for new uses of human intelligence, deciding what data to use and how to make use of it. It permits changed organizational structures that give more and more data to managers and professionals, correspondingly demanding more analytic or abstract decision making.
