In terms of Equity theory, Officer Simpson’s comparison is being done with Officer Bullis. Officer Bullis holds the same rank that Officer Simpson holds and is a candidate for the rank of Sergeant. Officer Bullis is not at all devoted to his job and does it with a non serious attitude, most of the time he is just sitting around sipping coffee and shuffling papers. Whereas, Officer Simpson is a hardworking person and she tries her best to put her maximum efforts in the job.
(Robbins & Judge, 2008) Officer Simpson efforts made her deserving for the promotion but, instead of getting promoted she heard the news that Officer Bullis was more likely to get the promotion. This news made her least motivated to perform the tasks and instead of doing the job with maximum efforts and devotion she got frustrated and gave up with the tasks. Qs. 2) Answer: If we look this case through Expectancy theory we can clearly see that the component that is lacking is Expectancy.

I would have applauded her brilliant efforts made towards development of programs and community education, and would have motivated her and guided her towards the implementation of those programs. She did not know much about implementation so I would have supported her in all possible ways and provided my expertise to rightly implement those well formed programs.
