He also helped found several trade unions such as the Grand National Consolidated Trades easing working hours, pay and living conditions, as well as the use of child labor. He also helped in improving employment standards in England. He owned a cotton mill in Lankan, Scotland and even built the village of New Lankan for his workers. He treated his workers very well and did not employ children under the age of 10.

He also introduced a 10 hour working day rule in his factory, which was unheard of at the time.
