Management Information Systems Essay

1. The opinion presented in the case works against using databases which should not exactly be the case. Databases can be simple but still significant in helping business on the strategic level. In this case, concerns are justified because the consultants did not try to understand the simplicity of the business and implemented a hard to use and non user friendly database which did not help the business.

Rather, it created difficulties for the business. Other factors include the owner’s non acceptability of using different technology in the business and not being willing to learn the nuances of the new technology. 2. Though data can be seen at a glance in the database through various queries, it becomes very difficult to complete a mail merge activity or send out a mass email.

Sorting out psychical and email addresses is an ordeal that many employees do not want to go through in this case as it takes longer and is more technical than the regular excel spreadsheets which are being used as a substitute for the database. 4. shared within the entire organization; it is also related to keeping his list of clients separate from others so that no one else knows how many clients he has and what business he is gleaning from them.

His concept of not sharing the data may have arisen from the fact that others may have targeted his own clients or he may be worried about such a case happening in the future. 5. This policy would have been changed to eliminate islands of information with each individual. The problem that arises from maintaining separate pools of information at each end is that it does not allow for proper collection, storage and analysis of data which is the primary concern for any organization in terms of strategic growth.

Therefore, a centralized database with complete access at top level management and individualized access at the sales person level will be implemented as a policy. In this case, the problem is that analysis of data cannot be conducted and thus the management does not know how many clients the company has and what business is being generated from them. Control is lost in this case and in dire cases, fraudulent activity might not be getting traced in this scenario.
