If I was trapped in an elevator for a day and had to choose three people to be trapped with, I would choose Magic Johnson, Bono from the music group U2, and Jay Leno. Magic Johnson would be the first person that I would pick because he has achieved so much in the face of adversary. He is known for his athletic ability on the basketball court, however I am most impressed with his off the court actions. Being African-American, I am all too familiar with inner city neighborhoods being neglected from new business developments.
In 1993, Magic Johnson formed the Johnson Development Corporation, whose business purpose is to foster local economic growth and financial empowerment in long-neglected minority urban neighborhoods. His company has developed entertainment complexes, retail centers, and restaurants in these communities. Some of these stores include the Magic Johnson named Theatres, T. G. I. Friday’s, and Starbucks. Through these business ventures he has created jobs within these communities and used local minority contractors and service vendors in the development process.

Bono, from the music group U2, would be the next person that I would choose to be trapped in the elevator with. As with Magic Johnson, I am more impressed with Bono for his non-entertainment activities. He is well known for his international humanitarian work which has led to Nobel Peace Prize nominations in 2003, 2004, and 2006. After visiting Brazil, a country where I felt instant connection to the people, one of my goals has been to find a way to create programs to help educate and provide skill and job training to individuals living in favelas.
Faveles are known throughout Brazil as extremely poor communities that foster crime, specifically the drug trade. I feel that many of the youth who are murdered in these communities lack the opportunities that could otherwise change their life paths. By discussing these issues with Bono, I feel that his humanitarian experiences could provide me with direction, ideas and a realistic path to achieving my goal of helping Brazilians living in favelas. The final person that I would choose to be trapped with would be Jay Leno.
Being trapped in an elevator space could be very uncomfortable, so Jay Leno would be there primarily to help pass the time away with his comedic insights on life. Aside from his comic relief, I would be interested in how he maintains such a down to earth presence, while being a famous comedian. I am a confident individual that not only exhibits a desire to succeed for myself, but I also have passion to assist others who have less resources and opportunities than myself.
These passions of mine to not only succeed as an individual, but to also help others is what makes me stand out from every other applicant. In life, I have always chosen my actions that demonstrate the best long term potential. Attending The Jones School of Business is part of my plan that I envision being vital to my log term success. As the world continues to change and the workplace becomes more and more challenging and competitive, it becomes imperative for anyone looking for a successful career to not only have the drive to succeed but also the training and expertise to do so.
I am not saying that I do not have the training and expertise at the moment but I do believe that there is still room for more. The rich and diverse academic community at this institution will definitely be the perfect place for me to learn and be prepared for the challenges that lie ahead. Although I do not have the average GMAT test score, I am as motivated and as equipped as any other individual who will be admitted into your program because I am truly committed to being a contributing Alumnus to Rice for years to come.
I am determined not to be a student that settles in the middle of the pack and easily forgotten, but a student who will make a name for myself by leading, innovating, and pioneering during and after my tenure as a student. Examples of this exist from my High School years to the present. I may have not lived in Nashville for over eight years, however I continue to mentor youth and give presentation on various topics during the Christmas Holidays.
During my time at Morehouse College I founded an organization that helps Atlanta homeless. Rather than giving money or having a can food drive, my goal was to provide housing during winter months. Through my organization, we were able to get homeless individuals into area shelters which provided warm space and meals. While working for Burger King, I created an idea and a slogan that was used in Burger King Halloween promotions for the next three years.
