Obama on 2010 Budget
President Obama’s inaugural address has been deemed subtle in tone by different critiques and specialists in several commentaries. Therefore, there have been indicative parts of the speech that we can perceive as statements in which we can extract reality and value assumptions from. The reality assumptions in the president’s address are classified in three main thrusts; (1) the liability of the wealthy on the current faltering of the US economy, (2) the governments inability to get a grasp of its people’s trust, (3) and the threat imposed by other nation states who disagree with the United States way of life.
President Obama assumes that the prosperous should be the ones to be blamed in the current crisis of the US economy. The current downturn of the US economy, as studies show, is caused by the greedy. Thus, the president further elaborates these assumptions through indications in his speech that the market will spin out of control without scrutiny from the right observers. The value assumption in this argument therefore suggests that the US economy will only achieve its prosperity if opportunities are equally distributed to all the levels of the society.
Another reality assumption in the president’s inaugural speech is that the people of the United States lack trust on the government. This is further supported by the president’s value assumption that trust should be restored between the people and their government by properly managing the funds of the government. Lastly, one of the reality assumptions of the president in the inaugural address implies that the way of life of the United States’ is deemed threatening to other factions.
Thus, terrorist entities consider violence to stop the United States in continuing to live in such conditions. This assumption becomes perceptible in the address when the president claimed that there should be no apologies made on the US’s way of life to those who seek to advance their goals by means of terrorism. The value assumption in this is that the way of life of the US does not harm any other entities and this way of life does not need to change itself to appease with those who impose threats to the country.
All these three; the economy, the government, and security, of the US are tackled lightly in the address of the president. All other heavy issues in the speech are directly indicated and do not need to be implied and assumed by the audience. Reference CNN. (January 20, 2009). We are ready to lead. [CNN. com]. Washington.
