Organization and Leadership

In every organizational grouping, the proper motivation and leadership is needed to maintain stability and attain the required objectives and goals. Though there are many significant approaches that can be applied, there must be an active collaboration among the leader and the subordinates in order to attain specific and associated tasks and responsibilities. In the end, by incorporating the needed motivation and leadership styles, the group can maximize each ones capability and open up possibilities for improvement and betterment in the things they do.

The movie 12 O’clock High is one great example to showcase the relevance of leadership and motivation in a particular scenario. Since the setting of the movie revolves around World War II, the situation calls for great responsibility and tutelage from the military ranks because this shall be one determinant for the outcome of the war. It is in here that the characterization of Colonel Keith Davenport and General Frank Savage manifests itself to viewers. Looking at the style employed by Colonel Davenport, his leadership style seems to have not coincided with the required responsibilities for his team.

Looking at his method of headship within the organization, it can be characterized to be democratic or participative. In this

process, the leader opens up possibilities to become closer with members as he/she invites each member to give out their opinions in specific areas of interest (Mind Tools, 2003). This in turn resulted towards the fall of his team. His ability to reach out with his peers and subordinates created a compromise with the mission that they had to accomplish.

Instead of leading his team towards success, the outcome came the other way as he began losing his men and people became demotivated. This low morale can be explained by the absence of effective leadership style which then resulted to the degradation of the group (Changing Minds, 2002). After Colonel Davenport was replaced by General Frank Savage in the 918th Bomb Group, it was in here that change started to manifest and increased the outcomes for success. The reason behind this may revolve around the leadership style advocated by General Savage.

This system can be characterized to be autocratic and strict in orientation. Looking at it, “people within the team are given few opportunities for making suggestions, even if these would be in the team’s or organization’s interest” (Mind Tools, 2003, p. 1). At first, this approach was detested by his subordinates because he was too strict and often followed the rules in a clear and concise manner. He saw no excuses in every mistake and miscalculation. However, this began to change when the Bomb group started gaining victories.

After this, General Savage gained the respects of his peers while motivating them to improve and develop at the same time. He motivated his team by giving them the opportunity to shine under his tutelage and by following orders he gave them in the battlefield. Bridging the concepts together, it is important to synchronize leadership and motivation to create new opportunities for the realization of goals and objectives. Seeing this, given the appropriate leadership style, it can help motivate the team and intensify the necessary completion of objectives and goals.

This is essential and part of real life organizations because it serves as the catalyst for change and can either result as towards success or failure. Thus, it is necessary that these two goals be applied accordingly to achieve desired outcomes and cater avenues for improvement. References Changing Minds (2002) Leadership Styles.
