An organization can be managed by a male or a female entrepreneur or a manager. However, the question that arises here is whether the women differ in style of management with the men or not and whether their style is as effective as the men. I would therefore say that the women do differ in the style of managing a business; however they do not differ where the skills are concerned. Nowadays the trend that has been seen shows that more and more women are entering into the management and it is also good for them to progress.
Both men and women portray their styles of management as well as skills that suit the corporate culture well. According to the statistics of 2001 by Bureau of Labor Statistics, it shows that in 1983, 32% of the women were working on managerial positions but in 2000 the figure reached to 50%. (Atwater, Brett, DiMare, Hayden & Waldman, 2004). Although progress of women is apparent but they are still clustered in other jobs than to work at much higher positions and this is because of many factors that restrict the women to serve higher management positions.

These polices can be giving flexi-time to the employees, offering day-care services for the women who have very young children and the availability of various kinds leaves, etc. We can say that the businesses are moving towards humanization and are being more ethical and this has opened opportunities for the women. Difference between a male and female manager A survey conducted to know more about a male and female managers show that males are always more confident, dominating, they and aggressive, more influential and independent than the women managers.
People mostly agree that some of the positive styles of management are being consultative, pacifying, opting for a partnership than doing a business individually and collaborating, however these styles are basically the traits of the female managers and so people do not identify these much. (Schein, 1993). Effect of culture on gender stereotyping The women who have authority in the management create an environment that is more supportive and encouraging for the employees, however the men use their positions of authority opt for an environment that is hierarchal and in turn they expect obedience of their orders from their employees.
Since women are born, as girls they are generally noticed to be obedient, caring and expressive, however the boys are known to be naughty and like monsters. Since childhood the males are known to be warring while the girls are considered to be non-competent. However, girls are fast-learners but despite this fact, the men always dominate the women. Difference in style of communication The two things that women lack while managing a business does not know ways to communicate in an effective manner and the other is maintain a equilibrium between their life at work and their family.
Gender stereotyping is the main factor that creates miscommunication between the men and the women and this basically occurs due the struggle for power. The main issues that occur between men and women working together in an organization are because of the gap in communication that mainly entails power and sponsorship and the reason behind this is the difference between the ways the two genders choose to communicate.
Both take action in certain situations differently, they also seek advice in a different manner, the way they respond differs, the timing and their style of management and the way of expressing their demands and needs all vary from each other and all this is because of social conditioning and it is essential to decrease this gap to reduce these differences. I would give an example to make the domination and the nature of the male bosses than that of the women. When a male manager wants some work to be done by the employee, he just goes to that employees and asks him or her to complete the work by the deadline he gives.
For instance if he needs the work to be done by noon, he would simply say that “I need this by noon. ” This makes the employee think that he is being extra aggressive and pressurizing him to do what he wants. However, in the same situation if a female manager wants to assign a task, she would say “Have this to me by noon. ” This would make the employee feel insulted due to the unexpected way in which she asks the employee to do that particular task. Politics and Power at work Politics at work is very common in every organization and it occurs in every organization and this is the result of their desire to have power.
The person in the organization who has the most power is basically the CEO and the value he follows reflects the culture of the organization. The other people who are influential and have the most power in the organization also reflect their own personality types. Both men and women classify and implement the power they get in a different manner. Differences in styles of leadership There are many differences in the styles of leadership followed by men and women. As far as the men are concerned, they are mostly task-oriented, autocratic; they use the technique of command-and-control and are punishment-oriented.
The women, however are team players and are democratic, they style of leadership they adopt is transformational and they are mostly more oriented towards rewards. A reason that causes hindrance for the women to reach top positions in the management is due to discrimination and the reason behind this is because it is believed that women have less abilities of leadership than the men have and their style of leadership is less favorable than that of men. Other differences in male and female entrepreneurs Motivation
The men strive to make things happen, they are personally independent and the main source of job satisfaction they get is because of their desire to attain power and control. The women however are motivated when they accomplish a goal. This makes them have a sense of achievement and for this they need independence. (Morgan, 1997). Personality characteristics Men are more persuasive, and goal oriented, they are more innovative, idealistic and confident, they are more enthusiastic and they always want to be their own boss.
The women are flexible and they have the ability to tolerate things, they are not only goal oriented but they are creative and realistic, they are not much confident and they can easily deal with social and economic problems. Types of business Men are meant to be more energetic and tough and so they mostly opt for manufacturing and construction businesses the women however are more involved in businesses that are related to service such as educational services, public relations or consulting services. Support groups
Men seek for support from their friends, professional such as lawyers and accountants, their business associates and spouse whereas the women seek for support from their friends who are close, their spouse, family and professional groups. Background Men mostly enter into business when they are at the age of 25-35 while the women start their venture when they are at the age of 35-45 and the main factor of encouragement for both the genders is from their fathers and both are educated and first born child of their parents. Impact of changes on women managers at the workplace
Changes occur at workplace very frequently and they are especially more likely not to be welcomed when you know that everything is going on smoothly but some problem still occurs out of nowhere. Some things we need to consider are mentioned below. • Nowadays, women mostly retire late than they used to earlier. • If the women need some time for their family, they opt to go on a break and then return later. • Men mostly believe that they need to be politically correct especially in front of their co-workers who are women and they should offend favorable treatment of the women.
• Women who take management positions mostly wish to do their job over again and this is due to various reasons. Things women should avoid The biggest mistake that the women do is that they try to act like men and the result of this is not good because this is very unnatural and it makes their co-workers who are men even more uncomfortable working with them. Conclusion Research on gender stereotypes shows that the style of management and the behavior styles of men and women are different and several studies have been conducted that shows that it does vary at management positions.
Secondly, the attitudes of the two genders are vary and although things have now started to become more favorable towards the women but people still prefer to have a male boss than to have a boss who is a female. Other than this, most of the characteristics of running an organization are normally regarded as masculine.
