Organizational Design and Control

With the business for bureaucratic organization in the whole world being shaken and some researchers observing that bureaucracy has its days numbered, organizations are embracing the modern methods and design for organizing and controlling their entities. The ‘new organization’ is being embraced as adequate to counteracting and solving the modern challenges in the market and the workplace. More organizational tools are needed in order to have an understanding on how the organization has been, and can be designed, rather than consideration of the usual visible basic elements and tools such as organizational charts and legal documents.

Many different views are bound to come up, with as many stakeholders coming into contact with the organizational structure, and the scenario resembles the case of a blind man coming up with different perspectives after feeling the different parts of an elephant. An organization cannot be sufficiently described by only one or a few perspectives. Various set of comprehensive tools will be required to gain an understanding of the whole organization, without loosing the bigger picture of the organization.

However, the traditional organizational design and structure is facing criticism amidst its poor performance in the modern setting. The traditional structure cannot meet with the present challenges

and therefore is being replaced with more robust systems that will help achieve the modern objectives. The organizational design and control is very important as far as the performance of organization activities is concerned. Poor organization design leads to a failure in meeting the organizational objectives, because the organization cannot harness the maximum potential of the resources it has, or those that it can access.

In fact, a poorly designed organization cannot understand the full range of the resources it already has, leave alone those that it can access. These include the internal as well as the external resources. It is one thing to have the resources, and it is another thing to organize those resources to achieve the objectives desired. In the modern environment, organizational design is becoming a very important tool in the harnessing of the power of the organization in achieving its goals, so much that it would be considered as a competitive advantage.

Organizations with efficient design and structures are gaining advantages over those without, because of their distinct ability to identify the power of the resources they have, and using of this power to achieve what they want. Of importance is the competitiveness of the management to use the knowledge relating to organizational design and control to manage their organizations. Every firm has a list of objectives that it want to achieve, and there is needed an organizational design that will help in achieving these objectives.

The organizational design need to be built from the aforementioned tools. In addition, the tools will be essential in developing strategies that will help alter the organizational design, in an effort to meeting the listed objectives. The way internal components of an organization such as the degree of authority present, the span of control and departmentalization, as well as division of labor are working to meet the objectives of the organization, and the way in which they are organized, is an important aspect.

The systematic level of examining these aspects of an organization is one of the comprehensive tools that may be used. It is important to consider that an organization is a very complex entity. It comprises of the internal and external components. The interaction of an organization with other organization brings to us the idea that the boundaries of an organization are so expansive and unclear (Triplett, 2007).

In order to understand how internal unites of an organization are linked with external units of an organization, it will be important to consider the systems analysis tool. One of the interesting aspects of organizations to study is how the subunits in the organization structure are wired, and how flexible they are likely to be as far as meeting the demands of change is concerned. In addition, it would be interesting to note how organizations manage their various resources in the face of dynamic markets and processes such as those demanded by new technology.
