Organizational Development & Preferred Communication Style

Communication is defined as the method by which information moves or travels from one source to another and the information is understood in the manner that was intended. It normally takes place between two or more persons. In the business environment communication is vital and it needs to be clear (Gupta, n. d). There are different types of communication styles that are used depending on the personality of the person and the situation. These communication styles include high and low context styles, direct and indirect styles and formal or informal styles.

In business the preferred communication style is the direct communication style. It is also the communication style that I prefer to apply when gaining graduate level employment. (a) Direct Communication Style in Workshop Activities Direct communication is one of the styles of communication that is used in the work place. It involves stating the message plainly and in a clear manner for the intended respondent to avoid confusion or misinterpretation (Saphiere & Mikk, 2005 ). The message is stated clearly in a manner that is more effective than other styles of communication.

it during the graduate level employment level over other communication styles that exist. This communication style was used in workshop activities allowing the speakers to carry out each of the activities within the workshop effectively. The method allowed for effective communication and the respondents of the message were able to clearly understand the message and the issues being addressed during the workshop.

The speakers were able to provide the information in an assertive and confident manner to the respondents in the workshop as they did their presentations. The confidence of the speakers addressing the workshop was portrayed effectively and they were able to respond to the questions that were brought out during their discussions and their presentations. The message was put out in a clear and straight forward manner and this was important in the cases where the issue at hand raised a debate among the people attending the workshop.

The use of a direct communication style enabled each person to communicate clearly and give proper responses for each of the questions asked. In cases where emphasis was needed in a particular matter, various facts and figures were provided to further clarify any issues that needed clarification. The communication style also allowed the individual to give the recommendations directly to the respondents and respond to any issues that they may have there and then. The direct communication style emphasizes on openness in analyzing the issues at hand and in communicating and addressing the issues.

The respondents in the workshop were given the information about the issues as they were and this ensured that there was complete honesty in the activities in the workshop. The communication style appealed to me and I decided I shall use it future when gaining graduate level employment. (b) Direct Communication Style in a Formal Public meeting In formal public meetings different communication styles are used by the speakers to address those attending. One of the communication styles that are used by the people includes the direct communication style.

The choice of the communication style to use normally rests on the speaker and the message that they are trying to pass across. A wrong choice of the communication style may make the listeners misinterpret the information or fail to understand the intended information being communicated. In a recent public meeting, speakers used different communication styles but the ones who were able to communicate effectively to the people attending used the direct communication style. The speakers were able to connect with the listeners who listened attentively to the message and the information that the speakers were communicating.

The important message being passed to the listeners during the message was clearly understood when these speakers addressed the listeners. This was a strong conviction that showed the effectiveness of the direct communication style when used to address people and pass on an important message. It also appeared as the best communication style to use in a graduate level recruitment process as it will ensure that the employers are able to fully understand the information being communicated. The message is also clear and straightforward for the intended listener.

Other speakers who used other different communication styles such as the indirect communication style left the listeners confused and they were not able to pass on the message effectively. The listeners were not able to follow what the speakers were trying to say and the message that they were trying to pass across to them ended up being misinterpreted. The speakers left the listeners dissatisfied when they tried to argue out their points and this made the listeners loose faith in their arguments and their plans.

In the end the speakers left the candidates with the impression that they were evading the issue at hand and that they did not have a particular stand in the matter. The speakers who addressed the listeners directly on the other hand, were seen to be confident, honest and very persuasive. They were able to address the issues at hand during the formal meeting and convince the listeners to take their stand and support their arguments. Bibliography Amos, J. A. (2004 ).
