Overview of the Organization

The organization chosen for the purpose of this paper is US Army which is land-based branch of armed forces of United States of America. US Army exists ‘to provide forces and capabilities…. in support of national security and defense strategies’ (US Army, 2005). US Army is very famous around the world as it is involved in active operations not only in US but in other countries such as Iraq and Afghanistan also. Currently more than one million soldiers are serving in US Army which makes army one of the biggest organizations in America. Therefore, it is only wise to conduct research on an organization like US army. In this paper, the focus will be on the reward system and its effect on performance. The reward system in US army rather every army around the world is very rigid and is mostly dependent on the approval of Congress as to how many personnel can serve in a certain year. line of reward is the medals that are conferred on the army personnel. This serves to reward army persons for doing something beyond the call of their duty. There are various ranks of army persons such as E-1, E-2, till E-9 and an increasing number indicating a higher rank (Powers, n. d. ). If somebody from a lower rank is to be promoted to a higher rank, there must be a vacancy which would only become available if the higher-ranked person has either left the service or has been promoted. Powers also writes that there are three systems through which army personnel are promoted.

First, centralized system for personnel ranked E-2 through E-4. This implies that unit which the army men are part of is responsible for their promotion that means there is no intrusion of higher-ups. Second, semi-centralized system for personnel ranked E-5 and E-6 implies that the unit’s recommendations are important but the central authority of army takes final decision as to who is promoted which depends upon a number of factors determining the success of army men. Finally, there is a centralized system for personnel ranked E-7 through E-9.

These promotions are in the hands of the top military commanders who sit on a board which decides as to who can be promoted and who can be not depending on a number o factors including the number of vacancies. Preliminary Problem Statement: As mentioned earlier that US Army is a huge organization where it has to manage a group of more than a million soldiers spread around the US and other countries. The challenge is to offer rewards which truly motivate the army personnel to work harder toward the greater cause of their organization.

Therefore, this paper will seek to answer the question: is the current reward system effective and does it have a positive impact on the performance of army personnel? Research Plan: The paper will derive the necessary information from both the secondary and primary sources. Initial research would be conducted through a review of currently available literature. After the literature review, a survey will be conducted from a sample consisting of both the currently serving and former army personnel.

The survey will seek to identify whether the army personnel are happy with reward system and does it enhance the workings of serving personnel.
