Personal Statement Essay

Tension permeated the air in the room. The ticking of the wall clock jerked with a distinctive rumble as each second slowly past. A long moment after the swinging doors opened, the doctor emerged. “The surgery went smoothly; he will be fine. ” A wave of exhales circled the room. Feelings of relief replaced the tension. Everyone took a breath of fresh air knowing that we made it through this tough time and my father would be a hail and hearty man once again. Even the thought of losing him sends a pang of pain through my nerves.

Imagining life without him is like a fish without water. The love, affection, and caring which he and my mother have raised me with is simply outstanding. And seeing the smile on my family’s face after the confirmation that my father would be able to guide and continue giving his love to all of us, realization dawned on me that I should become a doctor. It was on that day that I realized how noble the medical profession actually is. The ability to light up a million faces rests in the hands of doctors, who are no less than God to their patients

in critical times.

As a child, I loved to dream of becoming rich, rich and famous like Bill Gates. To me, success and fame were the two most important things in life, but then I was only a kid. As life unfolded, my perceptions began to change, thankfully, for the better. Life paced rapidly and I soon began to understand the harsh realities, the pain and the problems which surround people. This of course, came through no divine revelation, but through the passage of time and my upbringing, which was flawless. After my sisters went to pursue their education in college, I was the only child left with my parents.

Although I was only nine years of age, the events and circumstances had augmented my maturity to higher levels and following my sisters’ departure, I realized that my father was now my responsibility. This perception developed after my father was hospitalized and diagnosed with coronary artery disease. I was overcome with agony and pain, but never had the liberty to express it for the fear that my mother would breakdown too. I was the supporting shoulder for her and felt like a man during those times.

I was an interpreter between the doctors and my parents, who were not fluent in English. As such, I had every bit of knowledge regarding my father’s condition, through the constant dialogue between me and the cardiologists and other hospital faculty. It was these episodes in my life which made me consider the profession of a doctor as a future career. Additionally, one of the cardiologists commended me for my responsible and caring attitude and suggested that I should become a doctor myself, a suggestion, which I considered seriously.

As my father’s condition deteriorated, he had to undergo quadruple bypass surgery and I felt all his deep insecurities, fears and pains, prior to the surgery. I realized how important the doctors and the cardiologists were to me at that moment. They were only next to God and my father’s destiny rested in their hands. At that time, I decided that if I had to make a difference to human kind by easing their pain and agony in anyway possible, it had to be through the medical profession.

I also realized that by becoming a doctor I would be empowered to bring joy and relief not only to patients but also to their families. More importantly, I would also get the opportunity to serve those families and patients who are unable to avail good care due to lack of financial resources. As a doctor, I would be able to provide Pro-Bono services to those in need. I was suddenly awakened from my deep thoughts when my mother hugged me tightly and repeated what the doctor had said, ““The surgery went smoothly; he will be fine. ”
