On the video, “Bad Ending”, Pauline did not act professionally in the way she terminated Scott. She informed a co-worker of her decision before she issued a termination letter to Scott. This action is unnecessary since the co-worker is not a direct supervisor of Scott. As a consequence, Scott found out about his termination through office gossip. During the confrontation, Peterson accused Scott of chronic tardiness and frequent late reports but she did not substantiate such claims with data. She also charged Scott of lying about his absences, which were based on unfounded office rumors.
On the video, “Good Ending”, before deciding to terminate Scott, Peterson based her decision through the categories that the Company Lawyer provided. This made Peterson’s decision strictly objective and devoid of any personal biases. She also culled up previous record of Scott’s tardiness, absences and negligence of duty to substantiate the case against Scott. Moreover, months before Scott’s termination she sent him a probationary letter containing what he needs to undertake to improve his performance. There are several points that one could learn through the two scenarios. Confrontation should be aimed towards the concerned individual directly. If Peterson decides to terminate Scott she should do so by directly addressing him and not through other channels. Allegations should be substantiated by facts and figures.
When Peterson told Scott the reasons for his termination, she provided proper facts that confirmed his negligence. Also, she based her decision on the categories that where provided by the legal office this made it clear to Scott that the decision to terminate him was not person rather it was based on categories that he did not qualify. Effective business communication entails people giving truthful, direct, and comprehensive information (Vicker & Hein 5-13).
