Providing Constructive Feedback – Positive as well as Negative

To know how well they are doing, employees need to receive regular feedback from their leaders. Providing constructive feedback not only helps to solve problems, but can also work to prevent potential problems from developing to the point where they have a negative impact on others and on the organization.

Being able to give and receive feedback is one of the most effective tools that leaders have in their leadership toolbox in providing direction for personal and professional development of their followers.

It is both an art and skill to give and receive effective feedback at the same time. Expertise on such would be shown and the result would even redound to the potential to move their followers and their organizations forward faster. 

Situation

In the organization I worked with, I have a boss who is an expert at providing constructive feedback. He also has a unique way of doing this by writing slips of paper which he calls “gratitude paper”. In each slip of paper he writes to employees stating their specific and positive contribution to the organization. This makes us proud of our individual contributions and then become motivated to work very hard. 

Lesson learned:

Constructive feedback is a skill that every leader must practice to perfection. It is a skill that must be used appropriately; not to discourage but to motivate.
