The most striking example of an ethical violation occurs before Scientific Engineering Corporation even won the bid to produce the product. When the RFP was received Gary noticed that the temperature specifications of their proposed product only went to 130 degrees F instead of 145 degrees F as was required by Space Technology Industries. Gary Allison informed Henry Larsen that he didn’t think the product was going to meet specifications and Larsen told him just to tell Space Technology Industries that their proposal was operative up to 155 degrees F.
Gary didn’t feel comfortable changing the specifications of their product but went ahead and did it anyway because he didn’t want to let Henry down. Most employers have a code of ethics that employees must agree to by reading and signing (Cutting, 2007, 1). Additionally, many members of upper management are required to go through ethics training before performing management duties. It is clear from the information presented in the case study that Gary Allison was not required to receive this type of training.

Gary Allison failed to live up to his ethical standards when he allowed Henry Larsen to convince him to present false information in their bid. Ethics for project management comes down to four areas: equality, truth, honesty and integrity (Cutting, 2007, 1). The lack of truth, honesty and integrity are certainly evident in the unethical decisions that Gary made when presenting a proposal that wasn’t based on the true specifications of their product.
Gary should have told the truth when discussing the defect of the product because in the end honesty may be more impressive than the proposal because most companies prefer to work with honest individuals rather than deceptive ones. Finally, Gary was sacrificing his integrity as a project manager by allowing Henry to sway him towards doing something unethical. This one act had the potential for ruining Gary’s project management career even if the combination of all the other factors hadn’t done it first. Legal Issues The needs of the client must be met in a time and cost efficient manner (Allen, 2006, 1).
When Gary Allison was put in charge of the project he was agreeing to complete the work according to the time and budget requirements of the client. This in one area where Gary did a relatively good job. He was willing to work sixteen hour days and do a lot of the work himself in order to meet deadlines. This is a good characteristic for a project manager to possess because it motivates the rest of the team to work hard as well. If Gary had been unable to meet time and budget requirements the client would have had every right to take legal measures to offset the costs associated with a failed project.
