Sustainable policies

Many companies are pressured to create policies that are good for business as well as the environment. For instance, IBM created a framework that proposes a wide-ranging approach to environmental and energy issues. This framework has helped to recognize and make environmental efforts a priority by classifying opportunities and problems into some diverse areas that can be broken down into manageable projects. Many international companies are pressured to go green as the world has begun to comprehend the call for energy conservation because of the increased prices of electricity and gas and a water shortage that looms worldwide.

This environmental problem has hit many companies and these companies are now operating in an environment that sets more severe controls over water and energy consumption, use of substances that are hazardous to the environment, gas emissions from greenhouses and the effective disposal of hazardous and standard waste. Additionally, majorities of companies are finding their investors, stakeholders, customers and employees calling for corporate environmental responsibility ( ). Furthermore, there is additional pressure to do this from the environmental advocacy groups as well as the media.

Additionally, many companies must deal with pressure from investors to be environmental conscious as they have begun to distinguish companies that are just after financial profits and those that make financial profits and are still able to sustain strong environmental policies. Moreover, many potential employees are preferring to work for companies that are environmental conscious as well as suitable compensation packages and social liability. Furthermore, consumers are now making purchasing decisions that are based on a company’s environmental record.

Even governments are been pressured to implement and develop brilliant energy and environmental policies. This is because many civic bodies are urging their citizens to go green and in the process, the citizens push for environmental awareness policies. Although the current worldwide financial predicament may distract the peoples attention from the problems of companies social responsibility, the broad policy to boost energy effectiveness and a reduction of waste and materials continues to present instant opportunities for profit improvement, saving of costs as well as talent management and attraction.

Conclusion Many organizations that aim to implement and develop smart energy and environmental sustainable operations are challenged by problems like: lack of logical and coherent environment and energy strategies, lack of actionable information and the inability to measure the greenhouse gas emissions and energy use as well as to determine how to effectively reduce them (Johnston, 2000, p195). Many companies are also faced with the problem of immature supply chains that do not tolerate worldwide consistency in the devotion to the environmental policies.

The issue of manufacturing and disposal practices as well as product engineering that is incompatible with environmental stewardship is also a prevalent problem. Therefore, business leaders have been accustomed to the growing pressure to become receptive to the companies environmental impact and energy consumption. Thus, they look across the companies, striving to address this problem by advancing the various processes.

One way in which a company can effectively steer its environmental policies is by creating a companywide environmental and energy strategy as part of its social responsibility to help the company to address environmental issues.
