Essays on Conflict

Since the beginning of time, the conflict has served as a staple within our society and holds both positive functions as well as negative ones. Conflict is necessary, vital, and has proven to be a catalyst for change throughout history, whether good or bad. Although defined in a number of ways over the years including; a difference (Mary Parker Follett, 1925), existing whenever incompatible activities occur (Deutsch, 1973), incompatible differences that matter (Coleman, 2016), conflict is simply contrasting, inter or intra views regarding opinions, desires or wants. When exploring the history of conflict, the purpose it serves, and the consequences, whether intended or unintended, it is absolutely essential to consider the underlying objective, which in most cases is to bring forth change.

Objectives of conflicts can range from enacting social change to increasing power or position to strengthening system maintenance, and anything in between. The most fundamental question we must be asking in any given conflict is not what caused it, although that is important to understand, what can we do as individuals, groups, or a society to move that conflict in a constructive, positive direction, as opposed to a destructive one? Although the answer to this question is by no means universal, many theories, models, ideas and methods have been put forth to optimize resolution strategies to ensure a positive result for all parties involved. By beginning to understanding the complexity of any given conflict, and the almost infinite factors at play, we as individuals, groups, and society can begin to adapt conflict orientations that will evoke positive change and minimize the negative effects that are often the result of mishandled and escalated conflicts.

In most situations, conflict is a zero-sum game, where one party wins and one party loses. This mindset stems from the fact that a majority of individuals, relatively speaking, are pro-self and seek to maximize their own gains. The most vital factor that determines whether a conflict will move in a constructive or destructive direction is one's own level of vertical development or lack thereof.
