The African business

Research is a process of planning, executing and investigating to find the answers required for a given phenomenon (Creswell, 2003). When conducting a research, it is important to choose the correct techniques for collecting and analysing data. Techniques must not only be appropriate, but the data must be valid and reliable. This project is designed systematically not only to understand the increasing complexes in the African business world but also to achieve reliable answers and information that can be used and presented for all to understand and believe.

There are two main research paradigms or philosophies. These can be labelled positivistic and interpretivist. Research using positivistic or traditional perspectives or theories see reality as a concrete structure and people as adapters, responders and information processors to achieve the efficiency and the goal of an organization. The positivistic approach holds that only empirically verifiable or analytic propositions are useful, since the term positive refers to positive or observable data (Crotty, 1998, pp.

67). This type of data is usually the sensory experience of external or objective reality. The interpretivist approach is seen to be in direct opposition to the positivist approach (Saunders, et al 2002). This approach looks for the culturally derived and historically situated interpretations of the social-life world. The approach essentially tries to understand the behaviour from the research subject’s point of view rather than from that of the researcher (Crotty, 1998, pp. 67).

Thus the interpretivist approach focuses on human beings and their way of interpreting and making sense of reality (Easterby-Smith, et al, 2002). This study took the interpretivist approach and it is an exploratory type. One way in which research methods may be divided is in terms of the data that is obtained, which may be qualitative or quantitative. Most qualitative research has its origin in the interpretive technique. Throughout the qualitative research, the investigators turn to the human participants for guidance, control and direction.

The evidence in this case needs to be extensive, detailed and rich in information. Further , the elements selected are deliberately selected for their particular criteria i. e. they are not random. The research process is qualitative, focusing purely on established data sources. The research method drew on the use of case studies. The reason for the adoption of the case study method is closely tied to the advantages it offers this research.

The case study approach allows for focus on just one instance of the thing been investigated (Ghauri & Gronhaug, 2002). In this case, the instance and object of observation was the TopicalCare International acquisition of TopicalCare Nigeria and TopicalCare Group strategy. The use of the case study approach also allowed for a detailed study of various investment strategies and possible implementation strategies that could be adopted by Multinational Corporations (MNC) investing in the Pharmaceuticals Industry in Nigeria.

Primary Data was collected through group interviews with some selected experts in international business after getting access permissions through letters and phone calls. Secondary Data on Nigeria and its economy, global and Nigerian pharmaceutical industries, investing information were obtained from various sources such as; Nigerian government, Pharmaceutical institutions and relevant companies libraries and websites, Also, data from the World Bank, OECD and some local journals, pharmaceutical and business publications were obtained on issues relating to investment modes
