The Crop of Goodness Essay

Globalization is not new phenomenon. Thousand years ago, people have been buying and selling to each other even gapped by great distances. There is a big difference though. Globalization, nowadays, has reached the qualitatively new phase of economic development. This new phase of economic growth is driven by the policies that have opened economies domestically and internationally and by the advancement in technology that has given valuable new tools for almost everything that is concerned about the progressing world(“What Is Globalization?,”) (“What Is Globalization?,”).

Globalization allows poor countries and their people to raise their economies, thus, creating a higher standard of living.

I have read one article about the good effect of globalization in Vietnam. It was written in the article that when Nike was established in Vietnam eight years ago, the workers had to walk to the companies but just after six years they could afford to buy scooters or even a car (Norberg). From this example, we can say that globalization, indeed, gives rise to more comfortable and better lives not just in the West but also to the poor countries.

Since globalization is not new to us anymore and so thus the role of ethics and corporate responsibilities are familiar

to us, too. Business ethics is a set of principles and standards that helps in guiding the behavior of business world (“Ethics & Corporate Social Responsibility “).

The infamous economist Milton Friedman once said that the only moral obligation of business is to make a profit and obey the law (“Ethics & Corporate Social Responsibility “). This is to say that as long as the company earns a profit, businesses do not have ethical obligations to do unless mandated by the law. But law and ethics are two distinct areas. Why? It is because we are sometimes ethically obligated to do things that the law does not mandate to us and consequently the law requires us to do things that we find unethical to do so (Cline, 2005).

We should bear in our minds that even these globalization and business ethics are not new to our ears because they existed ten years ago and even thousands of years ago, they are still and very, very still important to cultivate and further develop in order for us to yield crops of our very sweat and goodness.
