The New Core of Leadership
Nowadays the concept of leadership and effective leadership qualities is one of the most interesting topics of discussion, because in contemporary highly competitive world it is necessary to become effective leader to succeed in business and to ensure better future. Nevertheless, it is apparent that not every employee is able to become an effective leader or leader at all, because not all people possess the required skills, knowledge and ability to self-develop.
Only strong-willed, hard-working and shrewd people may become really effective leaders. Actually, a leader is a person who directs and helps other to perform their job mote than they ever have thought possible. A leader is able to organize and to lead the team in order to ensure the best performance of the company at the market(Murphy 2002).
As it is mentioned (Aldrich 2003) “leadership is about unlocking potential, whether individual potential or that of a group, company, or organization”. However, leadership doesn’t mean to tell what to do; leadership is the ability to inspire the team, to see what they are capable of and to help the team to work coherently and harmoniously. That is exactly a type of a leader I have seen in one corporation. This leader

Actually, this person always knows what is important for him, for his working team, he realizes strengths and weaknesses, driving forces and pitch falls. Moreover, this leader is aware of when it is necessary to draw a line. He is an effective leader possessing clear values and objectives as well as self-confidence, savvy, persistence and knowledge. It is necessary to outline the personal qualities such as passion, empathy strength of a character, humor, wisdom reliability, sensitivity, creativity at work, common sense, etc.(Hughes 2006).
Effective leader is able to use verbal and nonverbal communication as he is a perfect communicator. He is aware that effective communication is playing nowadays one of the most important roles in organizations and companies, because it is the only source of mutual understanding among employees and customers, directors and suppliers, etc. Understanding how to communicate effectively will help to promote creating smoothly working project teams; responding to customers, clients, and markets; living and working in a culturally diverse world. Furthermore, leader knows how to use nonverbal communication to benefit from situation as well as he is aware of cultural differences(Qualities of True Leader 2005).
The leader should known know himself, because it help to overcome challenges, ethic dilemmas and problems, to communicate with people having different thoughts and ideas, to make relevant and complex decisions, to define the sources of satisfaction and relaxation if necessary. The leader I have been acquainted with always sys that “we need to be clear about our own values, priorities, and preferences and not let someone else, or society, define them for us, because by clearly identifying those values, priorities, and preferences we can articulate what we want”.
Effective leader is willing to commit meaning that besides being self-aware and shrewd; he needs not to be afraid of responsibilities and duties. For example, it may involve putting organization and keeping it there. Obviously, lots of people what it means to be an effective leader, though they think that the only necessary skill is commitment. Nevertheless, it is incorrect as being a leader requires sacrificing your free time, to put others before yourself, etc(Murphy 2002).
It is necessary to pint out that it is easier to be a bad leader than to be an effective one. Nowadays the number of bad leaders exceeds the number of skilled professionals. And I have one example of such person. Firstly, it is necessary to admit that such person is completely inconsistent meaning that he says one things and than does another thing bearing no relation to the task set.
Bad leader is arrogant and he always believes that he is the only right person and every one should obey his commands. Ineffective leader is egocentric meaning that he is one concerned with his success and performance as well as self-centered meaning he provides no support for employees, no motivation, no encouragement for the team(Aldrich 2003).
Bad leader prefers not to listen to others; he simply ignores advice without any reasoning and considerations. Among other negative moments, such person is mean and abusive and sometimes he makes people bad without any reasons. Moreover, he prefers to avoid excessive responsibilities delegating them to others. It is known that only ineffective leaders doesn’t involve team in decision making preferring only rarely encourage employees. Additionally, the person I have seen, actually, lacks basic communication, emotional and intellectual skills thus presenting himself as an incompetent employee(Murphy 2002).
It goes without saying that such a person has no chances to become an effective leader, because he lacks proper knowledge and skills to succeed. Moreover, lots of mistakes are involved. Firstly, bad leader wrongly interprets the role of leader in the company, because leadership means leading, it doesn’t mean managing people. One researcher says: “Managing has more to do with directing day-to-day tasks, whereas leading has more to do with casting a vision, goal setting, and motivation”.
For example, when a leader prefers to devote excessive time to managing, it negatively affects the performance of the whole team destroying thus the vital team dynamics. The second mistake is that bad leader misinterprets the role of team building. Competent leader doesn’t let any member of the team go; instead he should involve every member to ensure the better outcomes. Finally, incompetent leader pays no attention to motivation issues, though it is one of the most important tissues in the company.
Summing up the discussion, leadership is professionalism, because not every, even skillful employee is able to become an effective leader. The constituents of effective leader’s qualities are ability to go extra miles and openness to changes. Moreover, good leader always know how to organize the team work to achieve the highest cores(Qualities That Matter in a Leader 1997).
