The retail industry is a highly competitive market where each and every single company is trying to get ahead of the other by enticing customers with either the quality, affordability or overall appearance of their products. As such it doesn’t come as a surprise that corporations are always trying to find ways to get ahead of the competition through either product promotions new methods of production that enabled them to sell their goods at a cheaper price while maintaining quality. One of methods that they came up with was to outsource their manufacturing process to third party companies located in the developing world or in China.
This is due to the fact that laborers and suppliers in these regions have far lower costs when it comes to production and it costs less to hire a local from one of these countries than it does to hire an American to do the exact same job yet at quadruple the cost in salaries. From this one must wonder, is it ethical to hire children to work in factories just to create a cheaper product for consumers? Child Labor in Developing countries For many countries such as Pakistan, Indonesia and China many of their citizens subsist on barely $5 dollars a day. What is unique about these countries is that unlike in the U. S. where families choose to have fewer children due to financial reasons in these countries it is actually normal to have several children and extended family members that the breadwinner has to feed.
It is in cases such as this that families encourage their children to work in order to put more food on the table so that the family won’t starve. It is at times considered an obligation but it is usually considered a necessity due to the economic conditions that surround them. As such the end result is the use of children in factories, paying them meager wages in order for consumers in the U. S. to enjoy cheaper prices.
