Workout World is a community fitness and leisure centre situated just outside Melbourne which opened in January 2006. It is a state of the art leisure centre comprising of a fully equipped gymnasium, two swimming pools, sports fields, a health spa, a sport science institute a three-star apartment style accommodation for 100 people, a bistro and a snack bar. There are also child mending facilities operated by experienced staff. Workout World has regular personnel of forty-four staff members delegated in each of the different business departments.
Peter Watson is the General Manager assisted by Ann Baker, a consultant in organizational behavior. He is a highly experienced General Manager with fifteen years of extremely successful and responsible growth. Analysis of Workout World Business Set-Up as well as Working Relations Four of the five business departments are operated by independent owners working under the name of Workout World. They have their own management set-up and even promotional materials which content are not shown to the General Manager or any Marketing Staff of Workout World.
Despite that, Workout World has an existing branding campaign and marketing strategy that incorporate all facilities. Workout World under the leadership of Peter had responsibility of sales and marketing, managing membership and general administration but do not have control over the product delivered by independent owners. But in general, he does not have control of the overall operation of the Workout World. Peter is the General Manager yet he does not have control of all Workout World personnel.

Staffs working under independent facilities do not directly report to him, but to their own superior back at the local government headquarters; only when there is problem, probably for some immediate solution. Peter’s hand is tied when trying to coordinate, direct and motivate everyone towards the same goals. There is no more teamwork and communication has slowly ceased because of the current structure. Attendance in the breakfast meetings designed to monitor the Workout World operation has become sporadic and many of the staff do not contribute because they want the meeting to over quickly so they can get back to their work.
Issues that Affect Performance Peter Watson and Ann Baker both realized that there is problem. Peter says, “For such a small facilities there are a huge bureaucracies developing that affect members and potential customers due to the inconsistencies that have arisen across the different services offered by Workout World. ” Also, the differing working or operational hours among the other four independent sports facilities affects the maintenance as they could not affectively do their duties. Usually, they perform their tasks after the working hours.
But because of differing schedule, they cannot find the right time to perform their duties. Contributing Factors to this Problems There are contributing factors to the existence of the problems in the Workout World as follows: First, the independent operations and promotional campaigns of the four other business departments run counter to the general goals of Workout World as they only concern of their own interest to the point that they are even competing with each other, or omitting Workout World logo in order to attract customers.
Second, there is no centralized management of personnel. It means that there is no control of leadership and therefore no accountability. In this case, the quality of product and services can only be determined and decided by those that have control over these personnel. Peter complained that his hands are tied up when trying to coordinate, direct and motivate everyone towards the same goals. Third, staffs of other departments were not much interested to attend breakfast meeting initiated by Peter in order to monitor the operation they had too engrossed in their work.
