Transformational leadership is one of the most effective leadership styles that are used by leaders. It was introduced by James Macgregor Burns who defied it as the leadership style whereby leaders use certain qualities to transform the organization together with the employees and make it successful. The leadership style seeks to motivate and inspire the followers to be the best they can be. The leaders are usually focused on the development rather than the results of their activities.
These leaders have certain qualities that they use to effectively perform their tasks. They have high moral and ethical values that they adhere to as leaders and that help them to attract followers. They have inspirational visions that they use to set goals for themselves and the organization. They then openly communicate these goals with their followers to ensure that they understand what is required of them. Organizations can use this leadership style to increase their effectiveness and improve their efficiency.

It is a process whereby one individual manages and directs people to follow a certain direction for the benefit of the entire group or organization. The leader helps the followers to adapt to changes in the environment overcoming the challenges and taking charge of opportunities in the environment that can benefit the organization (Gallos, 2008).
It also involves motivating and inspiring the followers to ensure that they are able to bring out the best in themselves and help the organization to thrive and perform better. There are very many leadership styles that exist and that are used by leaders as they lead their followers. One of the major steps that are taken when taking a leadership role is the understanding of the leadership styles that are applicable in the organization to lead the followers. The choice of leadership styles depends on the situation and the personality of the leaders among other things.
Leadership styles refer to the different approaches that are used by individuals to carry out a leadership role (Glanz, 2002). They involve the manner that is used to implement plans, motivate and inspire people directing them towards accomplishing a certain task and performing their work and responsibilities. Some of the leadership styles that exist and that are used by leaders in organizations include the autocratic leadership style where all decisions are made by the leader. The participative leadership style which is more democratic and the followers are involved in the decision making process.
Other leadership styles include the laissez-faire leadership style, transformational leadership as well as the transactional leadership among others. All these leadership styles are used I different situations and they are usually based on the beliefs, values and preferences of the leaders. Some leaders tend to use the leadership styles interchangeably depending on the situation and the kind of employees. This paper discusses transformational leadership and how it can be used to increase the effectiveness of organizations. 2. 0 Literature Review
Several studies have been done on transformational leadership but the explicit definition has been properly documented by Bass & Riggio (2006) and Boje (2000) who have been guided by the definition given by James Macgregor Burns, from his model of transformational and transactional theory. They define transformational leadership as the leadership style that is used by leaders to transform organizations and followers through their actions, speech and their personal traits. Babou (2009) brings to light the traits that are found in the transformational leaders which attract followers to trust them and stay committed to them.
Other authors such as Dennis and Meola (2009) highlight the four model components that guide the leaders to transform organizations and that also help increase the effectiveness of organizations when applied. This study is backed by Bass and Riggio who have also highlighted some of the components that are used by the transformational leaders, among them the problem resolution and individual consideration. In light of the different perspectives given by the different authors, this paper adequately matches the debate that comes with the transformational leadership style.
